Family Seabbatical

We are planning a Seabbatical in 2019, with the desire to start Summer 2019 in the Med, ending in the Caribbean Summer 2020.

We are currently looking at many different options for buying a boat.

Are there are options for us to look at for long term charters in the cruising areas we are going? Anyone have experiences they would share regarding a long term charter?

Thanks,

Quite frankly, no.

There is one company (Seabbatical) that specializes in long term charters in the Caribbean but the numbers really aren't that good.

When we looked at it for our break, it was looking like chartering, hell any kind of long term journey, was going to cost us $30,000+ no matter what. So we decided we could buy a boat, live on her for a year and then sell her and still technically be able to "afford" a $30,000 loss. And that's what we did.

In the end we decided to keep her and put her into charter up here in the PNW. They don't mind older boats and, while the income might barely cover costs, we have a boat to use virtually free instead of $3000-5000/year charter fees.

Something to think about.

I'm confused on the numbers. 3 to 5k per, year for charter? Seems silly, low. We'd like to do same and assume 150k usd to buy a 45' plus 5k per month, expenses for family in Caribbean ... seems reasonable ?

I was just being less than clear. We chartered pretty much every year for a week or two (3 to 5k per year) but now that have we decided to keep the boat we can sail those weeks for free. The income we get generally covers the cost of ownership.

I don't know about costs the Caribbean, but isn't $5000/month a bit high for a non-touristy trip?
