Recommendation Budget Bareboat Charter Thailand 2019

Hi,

my boyfriend turns 60 on 12th Jan 2019 and mentioned he would love to be on a sailing cat [emoji1]

Awesome, because I am the sailing lady and got him into sailing.

Can anyone recommend a not too expensive chartering base in Thailand?

I own a Woods Mira www.ladyrover.com but weather in France is not good enough that time of the year. So we think about chartering.
As I still have to do a lot of things on Lady Rover we are on a budget.

A Lagoon 38 or similar would be fine. A genaker would be nice.

Definitely bareboat, but with proper anchor and safety gear.

Thanks for recommendations, its early for us, so we hope for a good deal,

thanks so much,

Fran

Alternative summer locations to be seriously considered :-)

January's just getting nice in Thailand especially Indian Ocean side, as opposed to facing Cambodia, might still catch a little of the end of the monsoon rains, but really NBD maybe a couple hours in the afternoon, nice and warm anyway.

Most Thai-expat yachties and related businesses actually base out of Langkawi, I think tax issues.

But lots of charters out of Phuket, maybe worth checking out less touristed city Krabi as well.

Don't go near Pattaya unless y'all like a major freak show, and keep your man on a short leash anywhere in that part of the world, the local goldiggers can be lethal, and rule of law barely applies.

Hi John,

thanks for the primer. Good to hear.
Any alternative, perhaps less well known regions in Asia with a good priceratio to recommend?

Have a happy new year party,

Franziska

I chartered twice in Thailand. I am actually here as I write this in Railay beach, but not on a sailboat this trip.
I used Yacht Haven Marina in Phuket. Got great deals both times but I chartered monos not a cat. The Phang na Bay Area is truely a magical place to sail. Be sure to also get a kayak to explore the hongs on the islands that have them.

Maybe Philippines but safety issues, bit more piracy some island areas.

Would not trust even poorer less tourist-developed countries to charter from. Maybe Indonesia, obviously Bali.

Singapore, Hong Kong super pricey.

Malaysia in the middle, more trustworthy than Thailand.

Excellent choice of bareboat charter boats run by a Brit (John), including various cruising cats, at Krabi Boat Lagoon . He's also got yachts at Phuket however Krabi is the major base. Recommend staying a night at the Boat Lagoon to pick up local knowledge - US$40/night for self-contained air-con room.
Krabi has v.cheap flights from Bangkok & Singapore

Yacht haven in Phuket has several charter companies An is a great place to start an finish.they mainly have multi hull vessels, charter companies are all on the web, but have had heavy bookings when I spoke with them .

Currently the weather is very stable an winds are good for sailing An you are right in the centre of excellent cursing (stay well away from phi phi don island just full of tourists),

Currently sailing at Koh Phyan water temp around 27c .

Franziska, i too can recommend the Yacht Haven Marina in Phuket. You may want to consider a Mahe36 there. Wonderfull sailing in that region. Ic you do Scuba, you can combine that with a couple of tanks on the boat.

However, January is high season there. Prices are up at that time. You could get very good deals starting mid May....

Hi Piscis, thanks for that, will consider this, the Mahe was amongst the boats I had in mind.

Re: Recommendation Budget Bareboat Charter Thailand 2019

Hi Franziska,

We've chartered a few times in Phuket, as others have said Yacht Haven Marina is definitely the cheapest. Of the operators we've found boatbookings.com to be the cheapest and very good (they do a Mahe which is about the cheapest (although I think they have a 4 berth Lavezzi at the same cost) perfectly ok for two, although you have to go larger if you want aircon.. we take extra fans cause the Mrs is a wimp lol) . I can probably find you direct details (with Milly) if you need them but the website puts you normally in touch with Kevin Moir who does quoting.

Good crowd, trustworthy and helpful. Their website also has a nice route to consider around Phuket.

If you're flying in, beware of the taxi prices as its run by the mafia and they can be extortionate (book in advance if possible).. it is touch and go whether its worth actually hiring a car for the week (especially if you're stopping on the mainland for a day or two for grabbing provisions for the charter yourselves).

Lots of beautiful places to see. Fair winds.

oh just another thing.. the reason it gets cheaper in May is because the weather turns and its, shall we say, more challenging. I would consider Pattaya or Koh Samui between May and say September/Oct.

Re: Recommendation Budget Bareboat Charter Thailand 2019

We were looking at bareboating this August in Thailand.....very good prices but evidently a good reason for it.

I looked up last year's weather in Phuket and was quite shocked to see days of mostly ZERO to 6 knots of wind.

Can anybody recommend some other area of Asia where summer sailing may be decent? Thanks
