European third-party insurance

Hello Eurocruisers,

As we move into the Med, we're seeing that some countries are requiring millions of Euros in third-party insurance. Our US policy doesn't have this kind of coverage, and they want a fortune to up it sufficiently.

I've called Pantaneus, and they want to write a whole new policy for us, which I don't want.

I'm sure one or two of you have encountered this-what was your solution?

Thanks, TJ

Re: European third-party insurance

TJ, have you spoken to Pants UK branch? but I am not sure how you want them to insure you without writing a new policy. Ask the UK lot for a 3rd party only policy.

I have always found them quite helpful, mainly because I keep giving them money.

You could try bishop skinner, I use them 3rd party only. 3 million 3rd party.

From memory they do a "skipper" insurance as well.

Never heard of any country requiring 3rd party liability but every marina/boatyard will want to see it.

I've been asked for insurance by marinas, but in reading noonsite/cruising guides, etc.-They say that Italy, for example, requires 5 million in 3rd party coverage, and that boats have been denied permission to leave port until proof of coverage has been shown.

Probably, nobody will ever ask, but it's better to be squared away, no?

Thanks for the link.

Hadn't heard of that one but seems so - Italy —

Maybe cheaper to get it there?

Pete, I've already talked to them-they won't write 3rd party only. My current policy expires on Jan 8, so I'm letting them take a crack quoting a full policy. My US coverage went up by over 20% from last year, so we'll see how Pantaneus prices out.

Thanks for the other links.

Strange.. I live in Portugal and have a 3rd Party liability only policy with them for my 39ft steel Van de Stadt plus an Accident/Injury Policy covering myself and crew.. cost for year ahead was GBP230 for the year.. including the Personal Accident Cover.
Plymouth Office, UK.
Maybe they're wary of the litigious culture in the US..
Just tweaking your chain..

I think that you're exactly correct about the US and our sue-happy populous. They will do liability only for an EU boat, but not for me... Can't blame them, really.
