Sailing from USA to Europe?!!!

Hi my name is Moriah Clark! I am new to the sailing world and wanting to know more and learn more One thing i've noticed is one of the jobs could be too cook and clean or watch the sea that I'd be willing to do!! I've been really looking forward to this and would want to sail from America to France or Germany!!! If possible. Is there any crews out there that's would want to got Transatlantic from America to France or germany or any part of Europe?!!!
Thank you very much

Welcome to CruisersForum, Moriah
Crossing the Atlantic ocean on a sailing yacht is something to be taken seriously, more so going east because the best route is in higher latitudes than going west. So, a skipper will probably be reluctant to take a beginner for this voyage.

What do you know about sea sickness?

Re: Sailing from USA to Europe?!!!

I am going this year from the Caribbean.

I normally do passages by myself but the idea of someone who can cook...

Hi Moirah.. Welcome to CF..
The higher latitudes aka the Northern route is not the only way.. between April and the end of June boats will be heading for Europe from the East coast via Bermuda and the Azores and also the Caribbean.
Post a thread in the Crews available section then sit back and check out the responses.. some research on the responders is recommended.. are they known to the community, stuff like that
Also you could view the Crews wanted section and contact any that suit your plans.. same rule as above.. check em out.. there's good and bad out there.
List your experience.. any relevant skills you can offer like cooking etc..
Good hunting..

This site on Facebook "Yachties in Mediterranien" is focused on finding crew mostly for big power yachts. There are some ads for crew for big sailboats and there are links to people who organise crew. You might find a link there or you might even advertise yourself there.

Re: Sailing from USA to Europe?!!!

Moriah... Here's my take on this...

A smallish boat from the east coast to Europe has little room for a passenger who can't or are not up to some sailing tasks. Cooking and watch are perhaps things you CAN do. A person who single hands such Mark of SeaLife... can get more rest and the journey is less stressful. I've done passages with a gal who wasn't much of a sailor... she cooked and stood watch. But we didn't have any challenging weather.

When the weather goes rough having crew which does not get sea sick is important... because if they do... they become a bit of distraction to keeping the boat going. You don't want to ignore the crew and their condition.

The of course crew consume food and water... and usually don't provide much company as one is on and the other sleeps and so there is very little time to interact... learn and so on.

It's definitely doable... but perhaps you need to find a larger yacht with a seasoned crew who can use a good cook... who won't be getting sea sick.

One needs to get on well with the crew because you are in very close quarters with no possibility to hop off.

If Mark is serious.... he'd be a fabulous opportunity for you.,, on SeaLife.

Hi Moriah,

You can also try to look and post on:
Crewbay home page - sailing crew, yacht jobs, boat jobs, sailing jobs, jobs at sea, find crew, find or www.findacrew.com
The first one is a free site for both crews and boat owners.

Good luck and safe sailing!

Re: Sailing from USA to Europe?!!!

I prefer voyages starting in Europe going west to USA rather than the opposite. Going west gives some 25-hour days while going east hands one 23-hour days.
