Shaft bearing replacement Morgan OI
I need to replace a grinding bearing between my transmission and shaft. Looking for tutorials but not sure what this bearing is called. It is not the cutlass bearing in the stern, but just aft of the transmission. Any suggestions or tutorials would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Paul

Re: Shaft bearing replacement Morgan OI
Are you referring to the stuffing box/interior packing gland. Has a thin locknut and a nut surrounding the prop shaft. Or maybe an cylinder-typre tube over the shaft, tightened by 2 studs with nuts ?

Re: Shaft bearing replacement Morgan OI
Does your boat have a "pillow block" bearing in there? Pic would help.

Re: Shaft bearing replacement Morgan OI
There should be no bearing between the transmission and shaft. We need a picture.
Here is a tutorial for replacing the cutlass bearing: Replacing A Cutlass Bearing (Sleeve Bearing) Photo Gallery by Compass Marine How To at pbase.com
I know that's not what your were asking for but it is a good reference in case you need that also. All his how to tutorials are excellent.

Re: Shaft bearing replacement Morgan OI
It would be unusual to have an actual bearing between the transmission and the cutlass bearing. I would also ask if you're referring to the packing gland aka stuffing box? Is the part you're referring to right where the shaft passes through the hull to the outside of the boat?

Re: Shaft bearing replacement Morgan OI
Thanks guys. Here is where we are hearing the grinding and clicking. It is at wood support for the shaft with the brass housing.

Re: Shaft bearing replacement Morgan OI
It appears to just be a support/anti-wobble for the shaft. But I assume it must have some type of bearing or ring for the shaft to spin. Just not sure what this is called.
Thanks again.

You should be able to find that bearing assembly. maybe McMaster Carr or Grainger's even. Trouble is, you are going to have to pull the shaft possibly to get it out and in. May be able to disconnect at engine, slide the shaft back a few inches and get it done hopefully....

Re: Shaft bearing replacement Morgan OI
Is there a zerk fitting or a small plug on the casing to insert a grease fitting?

Re: Shaft bearing replacement Morgan OI
No there isn't. Is it called a center support bearing on a boat?

Re: Shaft bearing replacement Morgan OI
Just replaced my mid bearing on my oi. Got my bearing from McMaster Carr. The hard part is loosing the bottom of the rudder and pulling the shaft back past the rudder. You might as well pull the shaft out and replace the stern bearing too. It will likely need it.

Repack the stuffing box also.
