Earning Money While Cruising

"I'd like to create an exhaustive list of how folks who are deeply passionate about cruising have also found ways to make money while cruising.

Here a quick list to start us off:

1. Writing books

2. Editing magazines

3. Charter own boat

4. Software development"

The above is what the OP (Agility) wrote when he started the "Make Money wile Cruising" thread, back in 2010. There are some great ideas in the early pages of that thread.

Sadly, that thread has deteriorated into an argument about the merits of various stock market strategies.

So i've started a new thread with the emphasis on EARNING a living while cruising.

For me, my plan is to teach; Engrich and Accounting, or anything else i can pretend to be an expert in. My cruising grounds, at least initially, will be South East Asia, where the market for English teachers is large, with a wide variety of salaries on offer.

I have a savings target to reach before i cast off, enough for a two year cruising sabbatical before i'll need to stop and work.

When i've searched Odesk and Elance for other accounting or writing work, i'm a little disheartened at the pay rates on offer, but perhaps i'm missing something?

Anyhow, it would be great if this new thread became a repository for ideas on the topic.
Call me a dreamer, but maybe it will happen...

Matt

Buy and sell something.

Doesn't matter what you buy or sell (well as long as it's legal) just learn the market, suppliers and customers, build trust and relationships with both and you're in business.

Of course it doesn't happen overnight and does take some reasonable communication skills and motivation. I have spent 20 years importing, exporting and trading. Started for a company in an office, now work at home but can do the job from anywhere I can make a phone call or send an email. With SSB and satellite that could be anywhere on the planet.

Plan to move on board in a year or two and keep on doing it. Might even get to see some of my overseas contacts in person.

Hey, I've got an idea. Maybe I'll teach seminars on how to do it and charge a lot of money.

Read The 4 Hour Work Week and apply it. It took me awhile but I finally made it work for me.

Re: EARNING Money While Cruising

I read 4HWW a couple of years ago and did indeed apply some of the ideas to the Accounting Practice i had at the time.
I have since sold the practice and moved aboard, and switched careers to teaching and i really love it.
While there are some teaching opportunities that can be done online, i really like teaching a room full of people, which of course can not be done remotely.

Good suggestion from you though. Can you let us in on which of the principles in the book worked for you and enabled you to go off cruising full time?

Now you are thinking in correct direction! But I would modify the idea slightly. Have several webinars, then using the information collected during them (like, questions from noobs, things that interest people the most, etc) create a comprehensive e-course, or some serious-looking infoproduct - and then sell it, properly (with affiliates etc). This will give you the stream of automatic money, no matter what you do. Or what you don't. Independent automatic income is the only thing worth investing effort and time into, everything else is yet another work. Even if it is outside a rat race, it is still work. You are still a slave.

I think perhaps "automatic income" might belong in the other thread

Don't we already have an extensive, and fairly exhaustive, thread about this?

Oh yes, here we go... http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ist-37982.html

I think his objective is to get away from the 'Wall Street Casino' obsession that's overtaken that thread..
OP... teaching English as a foreign language in foreign ports is going to be fraught with difficulties... know folk who've tried.. what you need is a second language you are proficient with..
I knew a German guy who was raised in Argentina and spoke fluent Spanish (Argentinian).. he advertised 'Learn Spanish on a Sailing Holiday' in Germany.. his clients would fly down to Alicante and spend 2 weeks cruising the Balearic's and gaining a working knowledge of Spanish.. he usually had 2-3 people cruising with him 7mths of the year.

Re: EARNING Money While Cruising

I think it is important to distinguish between earning money 'working from home',
and ways that are particular to cruising. Electronic Market Trading for example has no particular relevance to cruising.
Writing a cruising blog or reviewing cruisers products would be relevant.

OKay, so here is my latest suggestion, how about marriage counseling targeted
to cruisers?

Re: EARNING Money While Cruising

Some people also think there's a distinction between earning money, and breeding it.

Nimblmotors, I am a marriage therapist and have considered this plan as my wife and I plan our escape. The only concern I really have is licensing and the risk to ones lic for practicing out of a lic area. Might not be a prob if no one reports u, but this is definitely something I'm considering!

Yeah, that's all very well, Boatie, but you cheated.

You've obviously read the OP !

That's a bit old-school, innit?

I was involved in the other Thread as well... before the Geeks, Gamblers and Con Artists joined in...

Re: Earning Money While Cruising

Busking might be a good option, provided you have the chops and can bring people to tears in a good way, good vocal technique so you don't lose your voice, and your musical instrument is portable.

Best for a singlehander, perhaps, particularly if you're sufficiently gaunt and talented.

People will take you home and feed you, but they will probably draw the line at you bringing the whole crew!

It's probably quite a good fit with a cruiser who doesn't stay too long in one place, because novelty appears to be indispensable to making a living by busking.

Those who live ashore with their own home seem to need to be somewhere like London or Paris to make a permanent living, and even then they have to move around a lot, and play some gigs as well ...

Re: Earning Money While Cruising

There is always diving work to be done around boats. Cleaning hulls in-water, changing zincs, freeing lines from props, inspecting moorings, etc...
I would think any certified diver could make enough spending money to make it worthwhile. That is my plan, in addition to chartering out for sunset and day cruises. Of course you have to have both a dive cert, Captains license, and a properly documented boat. But, with a little planning, it can be done.
