SSB and Battery Chargers

I've got to replace my old Xantrex battery charger. Someone on another thread I'd posted to suggested there's a charger out there that minimizes SSB interference. Anyone aware of it? Thanks.

Re: SSB and Battery Chargers

My battery charger is within two feet of my HF ham radio, with no interference. I'm going out to the boat now, and will give you a model number within a few hours. I know the problem - I had a VHF radio stop transmitting because I was leaving the Sat phone with its charger lying on top of it on the instrument panel.

OK - It's a ProNautic; I'll get the model number. It supplies 50+ amps to a bank of seven size 27 house batteries, and does a wonderful job of taking care of them. Do remember the RF chokes around the wires!

Sailshabby,
While I've come to the conclusion that no reasonably-priced switch-mode charger is completely clean of RFI....the fact is IOTA is the cleanest I've ever seen!!

I give credit to Bill (btrayfors) for recommending an IOTA charger to me, years ago!!

I have an IOTA DLS-90/IQ4, which only starts to put out some low-level wideband RFI when it's really charging strong (above 50 amps), and only truly objectionable when really pumping out (above 75 amps)...
And, I'm a radio nut, and am extremely critical / cognizant of RFI...so, most might not even have a problem with what it produces!!!

Oh, and it does a really nice job of charging, too!!

Hope this helps..

Fair winds.

Re: SSB and Battery Chargers

I can't recommend a good one, but can say that the Pro Mariner one that I have is very noisy. But, after a good deal of research, I derived a methodology that solves the problem: I turn it off when I'm on the air!

If you do find a good one, please post the info here, and John, tks for the info on Iota.

Re: SSB and Battery Chargers

I have found that the biggest source of HF RFI on the boat is the electronic control circuit for the Danfoss BD50 compressor in the fridge.

The cheapest large capacity, high quality, battery charger for house batteries is a large capacity transformer and diode bridge connected in parallel with your solar panels to supply unregulated DC to the panel regulators.
