OpenCPN - internal GPS - AIS via Wlan

Hi Folks,
this issue has been adressed in several other posts but I have not found a solution...

I have bought a Lenovo Thinkpad 8 and have trouble to connect OpenCPN to the internal GPS receiver. Is their any solution to this problem? For sure I am not the only one who wants to use the built in GPS.

Also I would like to ask, if somebody can help me with the settings for receiving AIS from a Camino 108W via Wifi.

Many thanks for your help
Klaus

Re: OpenCPN - internal GPS - AIS via Wlan

Please do a search for win 8 thread. Once you find thread you should read it to find the small script that is needed. Alternatively search under win gps. Or look under documentation for accessory programs for win 8 (I posted this a while ago after a clever user figured it out. He also has a website. There is also a tracker feature request that I entered. You can search tracker for that. Gps is available for win 8 tablets with built in gps.

Re: OpenCPN - internal GPS - AIS via Wlan

Have searched manuals etc. only found this old thread addresing issue of internal gps.
I have a new win10 hp, internal gps works fine with NV and others.
Opencpn does not find it.

Any new solutions to the problem, this is for win 7-8.

Thank you

If you sort this then the internal GPS is irrelevant as AIS streams also contain your GPS position.

Mario
I do not believe there is any problem with opencpn. Many many users have this OS. To make this statement is quite presumptive. You have not provided enough detail so that we can help you.

Try the manual and read Exploring Opencpn pdf.

Mr Gleason,
Thank you for the response. I have a windows 10 hp laptop with internal gps.
As stated before my NV chart program works fine with it.
Opencpn, does not see the internal gps (there is nothing presumptive about this statement), simply stating my problem.
I use a cheap puck usb gps without issues on NV and Opencpn.
The manual has one paragraph re win 10 and gps, suggest you buy a special puck. As for internal gps I see nothing about it.

I have not stated there is a problem with opencpn, just asking if some one could help me figure how to have opcn see my internal gps or if it is possible.

Thank you and pardon any inconvenience or lack of information.

Regards,
Mario

Mario...
If your internal GPS can't be switched to produce NMEA 0183 data (Which we do not know at this moment), you have to use some external program to convert the Windows Location API data to NMEA 0183, as explained in https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...n8_gnss_sensor

No problem. I guess I was a little defensive about Opencpn.
If you have suggestions to improve our instructions for Windows 10, please make specific suggestions, it will be appreciated by all that follow. I will make the changes in the User Manual.

I think Nohal has a good suggestion for you.

Re: OpenCPN - internal GPS - AIS via Wlan

Are you sure 108W does NOT output own position sentence on wifi?

For if it does, as it should, then there is no point in running the internal gps on the tablet. Save energy, pick up the position sentence from the wifi stream and use it in your plotting/ais app.

A tablet running its internal gps will last that bit less than one using the wifi stream.

Cheers,
b.

I have exactly the same problem. To use a wifi stream - sorry but I do follow that idea. Must be a problem for a lot of people running win10 on their computers, kind of annoying you cannot use the internal GPS

Heida...
And does not the exactly same solution from https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/do...n8_gnss_sensor work for you?
