Wirie WiFi extender help

I have a WiriePro, for years it has worked fine. Today I can’t log on “incorrect password”. I’ve had this off and on for a while, but it usually resolves itself in a few minutes. Not today.

I send an email for support but——I get an auto reply—- out of business, on your own.

1- any help getting this thing back working would be GREATLY appreciated

2- I need a replacement. I’m in St Martin for another 2 weeks or so but I need to get a permanent fix for this. Any suggestions on a replacement?

Many thanks.

Re: Wirie WiFi extender help

I think we are out of luck as I have a WiriePro as well.
If you only want a WiFi extender I think I would give Islandtime PC a call.
http://islandtimepc.com/marine_wifi.html
I assume he survived the storm.
Yes you can put one together yourself, me I don’t want the aggravation, I just want it to work with no issues.

However I have little to no real use so far for my WiFi extender, no networks to extend and Cellular data is so much better and easier, and not expensive either so far.

I’m down in the Carribean and haven’t figured out cheap WiFi on every island yet. I’m feeling a bit naked without it.

Re: Wirie WiFi extender help

There is a Wirie Support group on Facebook you might want to join. No guarantees of course but may be of some help. https://www.facebook.com/groups/273545963403271/

Are you going to be in the US any time soon? There are a number of WiFi Extender options, but since you have a pro I assume you also are interested in cellular options..

I just wrote up this blog post on the cellular options available currently..https://www.sea-tech.com/2018/12/30/...e-for-my-boat/

Feel free to ask specific questions.

Wirie WiFi extender help

If your in the Bahamas, you can get an “unlimited” cell phone plan from Aliv for $120 a month and it’s a month to month thing so you can stop it or go down to a cheaper plan every month if you like.

Now when I pressed for a definition of unlimited, cause for my Verizon unlimited plan that was 15 Gb a month hot spot, I found that yes Aliv does have a “fair use” policy and a data limit, but that is 300 Gb a month, which if true I’ll never use.

Re: Wirie WiFi extender help

Before giving up hope, try a factory reset and once the Wirie comes back up, reload the firmware, do a new factory reset (just for good measure, probably not needed), and then reconfigure it. That should fix it for good (at least for a few months).
The firmware can still be downloaded from their old website.

You can also get the My Island WiFi hotspot at $100, truly (some approach a terabyte) unlimited data...

It's not a phone, but free VoIP plans abound for whatever phone you already have...

Re: Wirie WiFi extender help

Understood, but a phone, is also a phone of course, and no WiFi extender to buy, plus I’d assume coverage as everybody has a phone in this day and age is better.

If I were just going to cruise the Bahamas, I wouldn’t bother with a WiFi extender, and I wouldn’t even need my KVH satellite TV either, just use the phone for Netflix etc.

The issue is if you have a phone plan, you may not be able (throttling) to get the bandwidth (total data) you need or have a high price to pay for it.

So the difference would be getting all your internet from either a phone hotspot or a dedicated hotspot, but a phone has its data limits or costs or both...

So far, though I've exceeded my data last month, first time, I have not experienced throttling...

Re: Wirie WiFi extender help

Aliv won’t throttle or supposedly won’t until exceed 300Gb
Verizon does at 15Gb
That is how they can advertise “unlimited” cause it is actually unlimited, just in Verizon’s case once you hit 15Gb on your hotspot, your data is throttled to 600kb, but you can still have all you want, just at a crawl.

I’m not going to hit 300 Gb I feel pretty sure, even streaming TV.
Aliv like everyone else has an app where you can track minutes used, messages sent, and data used of course.

All I’m saying is it seems at least in the Bahamas the need for WiFi is diminished now with cell data being so available for a decent price.

Re: Wirie WiFi extender help

We have “unlimited” verizion voice/data for USA/canada/Mexico. But they throttle at 0.5gb/day when outside the USA. Verizion has a travel plan for overseas, $10/day but data is often very slow.

We are in St Martin and I have a Chippie, $50 for 16gb. Good for SM/Anguilla/St Bart’s. I don’t know about Guadeloupe/Martinique/Dominica where we are going next.

Re: Wirie WiFi extender help

Well, shades ya know. Wirie got back to me with a suggestion that addressed the issue I was having. So now I’m good for a while again. Whew!

Its a shame to see them go. I’ve had nothing but good experience from them.

Can you post your problem and the fix here or in the facebook group for others to reference?

Glad to hear they responded.
