Morgan 382 - Moving Traveler to Deck?

After losing our Gulfstar Sailmaster 39 to Irma, the hunt is on for a new 35-40 year old, offshore-capable Boat. I looked at a Morgan 383 in Wisconsin and loved it. The 382s are considerably less expensive than the 384s, and somewhat less expensive than the 383s. The main sheet traveler is located fore of the helm in the 382s but was moved fore and out of the cockpit on the 383s and 384s, which I prefer greatly. How hard/expensive/practical is it to move the sheet from the cockpit to the deck in such a boat?

TY!

I don't know how simple, but certainly should be DIY, though. I just looked at that boat during one of my online shopping periods and remembered that it had been done. I don't know if it was done properly or not.

It shouldn't be too hard to do a proper job. Figure the loads on the boom and mainsheet, buy a traveler kit, proper backing plates under deck, appropriately sized hardware fastening it to the deck. If the sail is loose-footed, make sure the boom can handle the loads being applied towards the center rather than the ends, like originally built.

Honestly, it's not a modification I would make. If my mainsheet controls were within reach from the helm, I, personally, would not move them away from me.

Re: Morgan 382 - Moving Traveler to Deck?

I looked at this during the summer because if the traveller is out of the cockpit and forward of the spray hood then I can have a full cockpit cover up whilst sailing. Kind of nice when you are 50.N The controls for a forward traveller still come under the sprayhood through check blocks to retain control of the traveller.

I took some photos by wandering around the marina looking at similar boats, particularly with similar masts. It would appear that you need extra connections to the mast to spread the load, which should be DIY or a simple job for a rigger. Then you need something called bridge track if you need to span a gap, in my case the hatch over. These are not cheap especially if you need to go more than a few feet. However, unlike ordinary track they have end pieces and a much thicker track to resist the bending load.

Re: Morgan 382 - Moving Traveler to Deck?

Probably you have already come across the Morgan 38 site, but here's the link just in case:

http://www.morgan38.org/morgan38/index.php

This page quotes the updates to the 383 vs 382, which included a taller rig with mid-boom sheeting and a larger rudder. I remember reading Practical Sailor review and Boats US reviews, which disagreed as to the timing that the larger rudder became standard. PS says it was phased in on the 383 and BoatsUS review claims it came in with the 384.
