Long skinny trimaran

What would be the feasibility and performance of a long skinny trimaran? Lets say 80 feet long with 9 feet wide main hull, with two masts? And who could design it? More for performance than cruising?

Very feasible..Here is a 64ft power tri..However, not a lot of living space in such a vessel as this.

As a sailboat, the Proa is probably what you are after, but also limited living space.

Feasibility depends on how deep your pockets are.

For designers I'd suggest you have a talk with Chris White, Morrelli & Melvin, or Schionning, perhaps others too.

I was thinking about a 100' long aluminum hull, 10 feet wide, spartan interior,
and amas about 50 feet long. The problem with a proa that long is, do I need a motor at each end? I want to cross serious distance with this.

Just exactly what is the intention behind this little fantasy project? You're looking to break some records, or just get to where the rum drinks are really quickly?

The point about trimarans (or any multihull) is essentially that, for a given vessel weight, you generate more righting moment to oppose wind force by making the boat wider, not narrower. Think about your "lever arm" being exactly half the overall beam of the boat, so the wider the boat, the better its righting moment for no extra weight. It is therefore counter-productive to make a skinny trimaran (for a sailing boat, anyway).

Current theory is that the amas are about the same length as the main hull. Bank Pop is set up to single hand and the older Bank Pop (now Spindrift) normally carries a larger crew but can sail with a crew of two. They both are a little longer than the boat you describe. Sodebo and Groupama are two other narrow trimarans to look at. The designers of these boats are all capable of designing a boat to your specs. Just hope you have a checking account to cover it.

I think the OP is thinking hull fineness ratio, not overall length to beam.

My French isn't so great lately but I think Banquet Popular V is in New York waiting for a chance to take a crack at the single-handed Trans-Atlantic record.

I think I saw they were parked over by the Red Hook Cruise Ship terminal, as it's too big to fit in any marina around here.

Maybe they are waiting for the tropical depression off Florida right now to develop. Not sure just exactly what kind of weather you want to "pick" for such a passage but I imagine you would want lots of wind along the length of the course.

No need to make it complicated. Weld the hulls out of aluminum, frameless construction (origami style) , don't paint above the waterline, small pilothouse, as I said spartan interior, keep it light but simple. No marble countertops.

Why not just buy a used orma 60 and detune it a bit ?
