Split, Croatia Yard Recommendations

Hi guys,

Last night, I got caught out in a blow in Vis, Croatia. The result was the rudder grounding and getting chopped (3/4 size now).

I am assuming it is beyond repair and will need a replacement. It's a Bavaria 46 (2007).

Any yard recommendations in the Split region?.

Many thanks.

My friend has used the Boatic shipyard in Trogir, Croatia and liked their honesty and lower prices. Boaticmarina.com

I don't think the rudder has to be changed.. If 3/4 th is gone (the tip of it) it could be repaired.
There is a thick stainless plate in the rudder attached to the shaft which roughly goes to 3/4 length of the rudder. A good GRP could handle the rest. With a good diver you don't even have to haul the boat, we did that repair several times on our charter boats.
If the shaft is bent, this is a whole different issue..

Cheers

Ah that’s promising news.

I am hoping it can be repaired.

I have attached pictures of it. The main rudder spar doesn’t appear bent so fingers crossed.

I had one of my sail-drives transmission go bad.. I had the yard in Tribunj pull the outdrive and resolve the problem. I was very happy with their work, yard and business hospitality. I would go back again.

Re: Split, Croatia Yard Recommendations

We were in Split this summer. Other than the ACI Marina (don’t like them), Split is extremely touristy/tourboaty and not yacht friendly. I also recommend Trogir, very close (though you have to go “outside” because of 2 low bridges). Try Trogir Marina (not ACI). It’s cheaper, very well run, and attached to what looks like the best run boatyard we saw in the Adriatic. We also really liked the town so, if you have to be stuck a while...

We did a repair like that in Sydney in the middle of winter. I remember the boss getting us to chose straws so we could see who was going for a swim to put the straps on the rudder before we dropped it.
We used ratchet straps on the rudder to hold it then released the quadrant and pushed the shaft down the rudder tube. The guy in the water helped man handle it while the lads on the dock pulled it up. Went pretty well and we did the same in reverse except two guys in the water to get the shaft back in the hole.

Kremik Marina, Primosten, Croatia.
I had extensive work done there 2 years ago.
Professional workmanship was completed on time and within budget.
Excellent results.
