sail boat rescue

Our Sqn. just launched in search of a distressed 26 ft sail boat, 150 KN miles of St.John's Newfoundland. Single handed, Sails torn and taking on water. Reports are he was heading east to Europe, just a kayak on board for dingy. roughly 44. 26 29 lat - 53. 20. 58 long last given position.
should know more tomorrow if successful in finding him, weather pretty turbulent up this way right now don't think I would want to be crossing this late in the season.

I'm sitting in Lewisporte. We had a heck of a lot of wind this morning. Folks next to us had a lip of Genoa get picked out and took 5 of us to get that back under control. Anti get dock was getting stressed by a 40 trawler wind load. A small boat tied to a bit of dock railing ripped that off. That's in the marina.

Hello Hpeer, you are obviously visiting LYC welcome!! I know the boat that you assisted, was texting them this afternoon regarding, they were checking on my boat as well, how coincidental is that, most people on this forum have probably never heard of NL let alone have someone visiting my same yacht club !!
Yes the winds have been extremely brisk to say the least, just than announced highest winds were over 130 km hour, DFO have ceased operations on north east coast of the island. Cormorant heli. Hercules a/c and coast guard vessel have been dispatched. will know more when get in to work tomorrow.

Gosh, I'm a newbie here and probably not qualified to speak on this subject but I just can't figure out why some folks think a Kayak is a dingy?

I wish no ill will on the poor fellow, in fact I am hoping for and wishing him nothing but the absolute best. But I bet right about now he wishes he had a proper life raft!

Stick around, that ain't nothing. I'm not telling tails on anyone but there is one boat we met this summer that just gives me the willies. I pray I never hear from them again except in good ways. Yet they may well have been caught in this same system.

Update and successful outcome, this time!
A male sailor is in good condition was rescued from a vessel off the coast of Newfoundland, he was hoisted onto a Cormorant helicopter on Tuesday,185 nautical miles south of St. John's.
I haven't spoke to the aircrew yet so may get more details on type vessel and whether the Kayak was the only secondary boat he had. May get some further details on what exactly happened. In any case he's safe and sound and our SAR crew is safe on the ground.

I'd also be interested in his survival equipment if you happen to find out. EPIRB, AIS, VHF, Survival suit, whatever.

I know the life raft argument waxes and wanes. Some insisting while others feel it encourages folks with a false sense of security and then fails at the critical moment or they take too it too soon.

From afar and assuming a lot it sounds like he would not, or should not, have deployed the raft, if he had one.

Kudos to the SAR crew, those are some brave men and women right there.

Very happy there was a good outcome. Hopefully his boat survives the storm and can be recovered.

Yessir it was some blow! Thankful the gentleman was rescued in those conditions, difficult to imagine what it takes re skill & nerves to complete such a rescue.
HUGE thanks to crew on Chouette and Aquarelle for their help during 100km winds to tame and contain the flick of Genoa that got loose in the gale.
