Surveyors in Annapolis - General, Engine, Rigging

I know there are two previous threads on this topic, but I would like to have more updated information. I am flying out to Annapolis in the next two weeks to see a boat that we have a contract on. (New to us and a big adventure awaits. I want to be thorough) Tarn Kelsey and Derek Rhymes have been recommended, but I see Peter Hartoft as a forum favorite. Problem I see is that Peter does not have any accreditation. Doesn't this matter? I've checked both NAMS and SAMS and don't see Peter.

Since the last thread in 2013, are there any updates? Thoughts on these guys? Where are the women surveyors? Any recommendations?

Engine survey - Chris Oliver is the only person I see who specifically focuses on marine diesel engines. The boat is a Catalina and has a 25 HP Universal engine.

Recommendations for Rigging survey?

Thank you for all your knowledge. This forum has been so helpful!

Derek is great! Harney Yacht Rigging for rigging inspection/work.
Get an oil analysis on the engine.

Peter has done two surveys for me, one in approx '94 and the other in 2005. Both excellent, and I learned much from gong through the boat with him at the same time.

Can't say much about mechanical or rigging surveyors.

Always useful to have a specialist in the exact engine you're targeting -- I did that; the local Cummins guys did my last -- but I dunno so much about Universals.

I can recommend Capt Bill Weyant at East Coast Marine Consulting,Inc. He is AMS accredited and did a great job for me surveying a 32 year old Pilgrim 40 trawler, last November. Very comprehensive survey and report.
They are in Havre de Grace, Md. 410-322-6701.

Re: Surveyors in Annapolis - General, Engine, Rigging

Peter Hartoft is probably the most sought-after surveyor in Annapolis. He has done several for me buy and sell. Very knowledgeable and thorough. Try to be there when the survey is done.

An alternative is Bob Noyce. Also excellent and thorough.

For engine survey, I would ask Bay Shore Marine (Yanmar and Cummins, especially). based at Jabin's Yacht Yard.

For Rig inspections Annapolis Rigging; based at Jabin's Yacht Yard. Also,
Eastport Rigging Service, based at Hartge's Yacht Harbor in Galesville.
Both excellent and experienced riggers, especially if you are planning to go off shore.

If you can, do a sea trial for engine.

Good luck.

I used Peter Hartoff for general, Chris for engine (yanmar) and Annapolis rigging for up top. This was 2015. Time has proven that they missed nothing. Very thorough and professional. Hylas 54 Genevieve.

I forgot about Chris Oliver, but he worked on a westerbeake for me many years ago. He is also very good, but seems to do surveys rather than installs.
Universals aren't very common anymore, but Vosbury Engine was the local guy for them.

Re: Surveyors in Annapolis - General, Engine, Rigging

on a smaller boat like that, you can reach the point of diminishing returns paying for multiple surveys. For rigging I would just ask your surveyors opinion of what he thinks from what he sees from deck level. If you pay too much for a rig survey, you could put those $ toward rigging if it's not recent rig. If that makes sense. For myself, I would pass on the engine survey if it starts and runs well, looks good, makes rpm and does well on the sea trial. But depending on how well you think you can evaluate it, up to you. If you are buying a car do you get an engine survey?
