New from Pacific Northwest

Hi there,

I just got my first sailboat (clipper marine 26').

I am anchored in Vancouver BC. I registered in order to get some info and possibly put the odd question out there, if some arise.

So far I have encountered some rough times with my little Evinrude 6 hp two stroke and after about a week of fixing my starter rope recoiling mechanism time after time after time, and a water pump, I finally gave up and took off the motor and started making myself oars and oar locks. I never wanted a motor on my sailboat to begin with, but my friend got me talked into paying $600 for this malfunctioning piece of misery.

I made my oars in two days out of oak and cedar I collected around the alleyways around my neighbourhood and successfully rowed my vessel off the safety off Vancouver's False Creek to the rough open of English Bay where winter Squamishes (meaning winds in local Salish tongue) reach up to 50 knots and without a proper anchoring techniques will take wash your little lake sailboats to the rocks (haha).

I am meaning to keep my boat as low budget and self sufficient as possible. I am a strong believer of renewable power and sustainability and all that and am planning on pursuing my passion for sailing no other way.

just wanted to say hi to all ya'll fellow sailors out there and hope that similar minded folks would be found and we can unite. I come from long family line of Scandinavian and European sailors (my father being Swedish and Dutch) and am stoked beyond belief to get to know, sail and love the ocean.

with kind wishes

-Pentti

Welcome. Beautiful area of the world. My father is from the island. I recommend you read anything you can by Lynn and Larry Pardey. They share your sustainable, go simple-go now philosophy about cruising in small boats. Nice people and great writers too.
Enjoy.
