Fishing Kit Dream Purchase

So ‘Pure Fishing’ (which is these brands Pure Fishing ) is very close to me about five miles away. So hypothetically speaking if you had friends that worked there and there was a heavily discounted factory outlet... what would you buy to prepare for east coast US and Caribbean cruising...?

Reals, rods, line, lures...?

Re: Fishing Kit Dream Purchase

First, I would get a copy of the book below, read thru it, and then decide. Its the most comprehensive book ever written for fishing while cruising.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...1f0vF9o9dTBLdG

If you dont want to bother with that, here is my 2c.

So you have no fishing gear at all aboard? Are you into fishing or just want to land a meal once in a while?

Assuming no gear and into, or want to be into, fishing:

I would put together rigs for trolling, medium weight casting (spinning reel), and light weight casting. That covers the range of fishing you are likely to do.

For trolling, I still like the venerable old Penn Senators, I have 2 x 114h reels on Lamiglass Tuna Sticks. A good gaff for getting game fish in. A fish billy for beating them senseless. A basic fighting belt that is quick and easy to get on and off.

For spin casting just a range of rod & reel combos by line weight.

Lots of spools of line for the above reels, etc...

A good fillet knife or two.

If you just want a meat hook, then a Cuba rig loaded with very heavy mono (80-110lb test), a few feet of large diameter bungy or tubing, stainless leader material, an assortment of big ass hooks, gaff, fish billy. A lot less sport in this set up, but it puts meat on the table.

In the end it depends on how into fishing are/wanna be. Me...Ive got all the above aboard...plus: fly fishing gear, spear fishing gear, hook stick for lobster...

Thanks that’s just the info I needed I have a very limited amount of time to get this kit and take advantage of this opportunity. I’ll be buying two of these...

What are you looking for in a rod?
What lures would you buy?

Sorry this all seams crude and unplanned but the opportunity won’t last, I will take time and finesse the rigs e.t.c.

It was a happy surprise for me...

Large hand line yoyo and an assortment of large hooks steel leaders and various colors of large squid skirts. When cruising on passage. Its not for sport its for food on the table.
Similar to this https://www.amazon.com/Challenge-502.../dp/B003THIJHW
But with a saw and some plywood you can make ones real cheap.

Depending on how fast you are going and land a bigger fish you may want to look at a 2 speed reel like these instead of the Senator for trolling. You'll be surprised on how much force is generated with a fish fighting back and the boat moving forward. We have used the Senators for a long time but am looking forward to using my new 2 speed. The 2 speed reels will give you a bit more power to get the fish in when needed.
We do enjoy fishing w/the rod and reels, but as discussed the yoyos/Cuban rig for trolling are very a good option. These are the real producers on the boat. They are also easy to handle, store and are much less costly than the rod/reels.

For trolling, a common moniker is "tuna stick", this is a stout heavy action rod, relatively short (~6'), beefy guides, heavy reel mount, notched foot for fighting belt / rod holder pin, meant for muscling in big fish. I have had Lamiglass brand tuna sticks for many years. Penn also makes a tuna stick.

For trolling, a mix of silicon skirts of various color combinations, they are one of the more productive artificial baits. Brand name commercial lures are stoopid expensive, but its easy to make your own with skirts and other basic supplies (leader material, weights, swivels, beads, frayed line, potato chip bags ...). Different fish in different fisheries like different colors...why you want a mix.

I keep a few bags of assorted skirts aboard and mostly make my own trolling lures.

You can spot a few of my home made lures, and my trolling rigs, in the "fishing porn" at the link below:

How does one make a lure?

I met Scott years ago when he was writing his book. He and Wendy were a lot of fun to hang out with, spent a couple months with them on Christmas Island. He truly knows his stuff.

Re: Fishing Kit Dream Purchase

Assuming that you're contemplating trolling in tropical oceans, small feathers in pink are good producers. I stay with smallish lures 'cause it's difficult to deal with big fish: first getting them to the boat then dealing with a hundred pounds of meat. I prefer a landing net to a gaff as there's less blood and you can release the fish if you wish. An entertaining pastime while sailing in the blue water is to pull a "teaser" twenty feet or so behind the boat. You can get marlin and sailfish to follow along behind it, pulling it away from them when they're trying to eat it and really pissing them off. The colors that these billfish exhibit when they get excited is phenomenal.

Substitute For The Billy Club -
After Fishing all my life, I learned something new from a friend while cruising in the med near Stromboli several years ago. After trolling over 100 hours I finally hooked a 25 pound tuna on a cedar plug. After gaffing and boating this powerful fish, while holding the fish down with one foot, he called to his wife to get the cheap vodka. After introducing a little vodka into the fish’s gill, the fish instantly went limp. The vodka is a lot easier, more humane, and less bloody than beating the fish senseless with a club.

Suggest you have a look at these special offer from tackledirect.com
https://www.tackledirect.com/penn-senator-combos.html

the Penn Special Senator 113H2 is an excellent reel, and for your application I would go with 40 or 50 lb monofilament ( I use braid but Power Pro don't come cheap)

You want a Rod designed for a line weight 30-50 lb or 15 to 24KG and 6' to 6'6" long

That should cover any trolling for any fish you would reasonably wish to land.

look at a medium Sea spinning Rig - you cant go wrong with Shimano, and for a reel the D Series of 8000 or 10000 Baitrunner - Shimano do excellent Rods and reels and for a heavier rig look 10-15 KG or 20 to 30lbs
also Shakespeare Ugly Stiks are excellent rods

For lighter general spinning a 6'6" Ugly Stik in 15-20lb range and coupled with 4000 to 6000 series reel will serve you well.

I would recommend a Shimano Nasci 5000 Spinning reel ($110 from Tackle Direct)
I suggest at this bottom end you look at 15 or 20lb Power Pro braid rather than mono filament

Remember that tackle shops are trying to catch anglers and they are very good at it.
Lighter tackle catches more fish in inshore waters, and it makes it much more sporting and fun.

You need to know your species, especially if fishing in tropical waters round reefs, Ciguatera fish poisoning is bloody unpleasant

Note they do Penn and Shakespeare Ugly Stik, but apart from the Penn Senators, i would be looking at Shimano for Spinning Reels followed by Daiwa

suggest you visit tackledirect.com and basspro.com, more comprehensive ranges and sharp pricing.

Re: Fishing Kit Dream Purchase

There is a lot of good info in the cruiser-written ebook, Secrets of Sailboat Fishing.
It's very reasonable cost and immediate download. Everything from a handline to how to deal with an offshore fish that has very sharp fins, chutes, and teeth.
https://www.sailboat-cruising.com/se...t-fishing.html

Here's a free bit by the same author on handlines:
