UV sail paint....

Hi Gang, Anybody here have experience with some of the UV sail paint solutions out there for the leech of a furling sail?

I've seen several things out there on the internets, but am not seeing good definitive info.

The cheap way is described in this video, but I don;t know the exact paint being used.

Also saw a reference to Sherwin Williams Ultra Paint.

There is also this stuff, which might be as much as $700/gallon and may not be available for DIY.

Weight seems to be 25 grams per sq meter which is very light.

What have you seen with regard to durability etc with this approach?

Re: UV sail paint....

Durability wise, the stuff they use on the RTW boats, etc. seems to do well. Though as to what it costs, or getting a hold of some of it...

Wonder if anyone over on SA forums would know. Also has anyone ever tested what kind of UV resistance sign vinyl, or Vinyl Wraps has? Since the latter seem to hold up okay on hulls, despite being knocked about. Though I don't know what it's flex life is like, especially that of the adhesive used. But it'd be worth doing some digging.

And don't I recall some guys painting the netting on their multi's? Can't say which net material, or what paint. But it's another avenue to look into.

It sure would be nice if one, or several of the above made sails all but immune to UV. The lifespan boost would surely be nice, especially for sails that don't much change shape over time & use.

Time for some Googlefu!!! That or hire a 15yr old to hack into North's skunkworks division.
