NZ to Chile

Good morning all,

i am writing from Tonga possibly heading soon to NZ with my boat.
I am getting more and more fascinated by the NZ - Chile route.
I would like to collect some information, speaking with people already did it or reading about on technical blogs or books.
I am interested in the weather encountered, the sails used ... the lessons learned...
I also have not much experience of cold weather navigation, specially for a long time and I would like to ear about the solution adopted and gears.
I will really appreciate your suggestion.
thank you
Roberto

hi Ping,

Re: NZ to Chile

OK... more when the sun comes up.
Quite do-able.... I've done it twice in a 'glass' production boat.
44 days each time.
Don't go too far south... ride the 1020mb isobar... watch out for the lows that drop down through the 'rathole'
Head for Valdivia or Puerto Montt.... DO NOT try for the Horn.... that is for crazy people.
Summary of my last trip is somewhere on CF
zzzzzzzz

Re: NZ to Chile

Clothing? 'Icebreaker' merino ... doesn't pong on a long trip.

Sails? Just the normal outfit.
On the first crossing we had two x 24 hour spinaker runs but blew the head out third time we flew it.. it was old and rotten.
I always had my two smallest ( 50 and 100 sq foot) storm jibs bent on and ready to go. Not uncommon to run under headsail alone.

Rule #1 do not be tempted to go to far south
Rule #2 see rule #1

Re: NZ to Chile

Met a singlehander on a 28 ft boat in the Gambiers. He tried to go from NZ to Chile. After 109 days, he limped into Pitcairn. One gale after another. All of the canvas had been swept away.

Knew a steel Mason 65 which also tried it. They turned back a week out of NZ when one of the crew broke a leg.

I was going the other way, and further north, but saw over 60 knots in a front between Easter and Pitcairn.

Bottom line--it ain't easy.

Re: NZ to Chile

I did it a few years ago on a big aluminium schooner. We ran the southern route, Hobart, south of NZ with a quick stop at Auckland and Campbell Islands. Then on to Puerto Montt. It was early October that we left.

Weather was pretty good, I suppose we had our share of rough westerlies, but nothing nasty. What surprised me most was the variability of the wind, it certianly wasn't nice steady westerlies. So we had lots of sailhandling and regularly went from drifting with light air sails to heavily reefed over a few days cycle.

We were down around the 50's for much of the trip with occasional snow. So gloves were essential. And a decent dodger to prevent to much water below would be real handy.

There is some stuff on my blog about cold weather gear.

And a video here https://youtu.be/CJMIBbt2svo

We're looking at doing the Chile trip in 2018, but were also thinking about heading South to the Aucklands and Campbell Island for the summer trip next year. Looks like they are both interesting places to go to. Decent anchorages?

Lots of great anchorages. I guess we were lucky with the weather, so didn't test the holding ground, but it felt good, only spent three days there in total, 2 in Auckland island and one at Campbell.

Hardest part is getting a permit to go there. The scrub is VERY thick in most places.
