Rpi 3/2 hardware opengl and Vector charts

Hi All.
I just ordered a Raspberry Pi 3 which I hope will be here in a couple of days. I can't quite work out whether hardware opengl and Opencpn is working, how to get it it working and whether it will make much difference in speed for vector charts. I have seen that some people say zooming is faster with raster but I don't know how much effort I should put into trying to gather the info to try to get my Pi 2/3 working with HW opengl acceleration. Could someone offer me an opinion?
I am trying yo work out what computer I should install on my new boat and I feel the Pi doesn't quite cut the mustard for Opencpn. It will be interesting to see what the Pi3 can do

Makes a huge difference to opencpn , definitely useable. With that and the very powerful openplotter software it's a major player in the on board computers available imho.

Thanks for the replies. I am so glad I asked. It makes a huge difference! It really is usable.
Has anybody tried the raspberry pi 3 yet that came out today. I have ordered one which should be with me this week. Apparently a 50% performance improvement with the 1.2g 64 bit processor. I can't wait.

I have just watched a Rpi3 youtube video regarding overtemperatue. Once the pi gets to 80C it starts to throttle down. Best option was to leave top cover off and put a heatsink on the large chip on the upper section.

...and why you want to heaten it to 80C ?

The P3 works a bit faster then the P2. Yesterday there was an update of the bootloader.

Result: faster screen movement with OpenCPN on the P2 and the P3.

The P3 is running hotter then the P2. You can add a heatsink.

I'am using the beautifull alu case from Flirc, which has an alu pillar with a foam pad connected to the processor. The alu casing is working as an heat sink.

Not tried the wireless on the board inside the alu casing. I don't think this works.

The OpenPlotter has a lot of features and can run without a screen as an NMEA/AIS server or with a remote computer, tablet, Ipad, as a wireless VNC client.

Here at home running AIS via RTLSDR dongle. Also connected via an aktiv hub to the Raspi.

Bluetooth and WLAN doesn't work anymore with such a case. You will need outside antennas then.

Gerhard,
We don't heat the chips up, it generates its own heat. It's called thermal runaway when the micro has to slow down to help cool itself. If you look inside any desktop computer, you will see a fan sitting ontop of the main processor. It's not a fault, it is a byproduct of transistors switching and expending heat. I had heatsinks on my Pi2 as well

I like the rigid design and the cooling properties of the alu case and simply added a wifi dongle, as done before in my Pi 2. I have no use for the BT.

verkerkbr, where did you spot the bootloader release? I can't see any reference to anything being released yesterday.

simply in terminal by:

sudo apt-get update (lists)

sudo apt-get upgrade

A lot of changes passed and took some time.

I'am running the OpenPlotter version 0.6 plus 0.7 beta.

Some tests on power draw and cpu heat here, about 30 minutes in for the heat... doesn't run that hot.

Just tried the new OpenPlotter beta version 0.7.1. Screen movements are now very fast with a maximum load on the processor at 30% instead of 70%.

Looking in the OpenCPN log, there is no longer any mentioning about video rendering etc. etc.

Tried it on the Raspy PI 2 with the OpenGL setting to on. Does no longer work

But with this setting leaving to off the screen movement works super !

Has video hardware accelaration finally arrived ? Looking at the processor load this must be the case.
