Jimmy Buffett just bought a New Sail/Gamefishing Boat,... a motorsailer one might say.
Quote:
Jimmy Buffett’s famous lifestyle, delightfully infused with copious amounts of "island escapism," pairs perfectly with the personality of the Surfari 44 that Friendship Yacht Company is presenting in a scaled-back version of its Surfari 58 announced last November. Buffett will take delivery next November on Hull #1 of the new Surfari 44 designed by naval architect Edward “Ted” Fontaine and built by Pacific Seacraft in North Carolina, and he anticipates that the new design’s more compact length and personally approved adaptations – including those for short-handed handling – will “simplify” his life on the water as he uses the yacht for a home away from home.

nice boat, but it wouldn't last a month around these reefs and coral heads. Deep water boat.

Re: Jimmy Buffett just bought a New Sail/Gamefishing Boat,
I agree Canibul.
A posting I made on another forum:
Quote:
I'd like to hear other replies to this design, as I find a significant number of faults with it. I'll just start with one, 6.5 foot 'shoal draft'.
...from their website
It’s the perfect extension for living the life he enjoys, whether it’s in Sag Harbor for the summer or the Keys and the Caribbean in the winter
I think a few of those areas are pretty shallow, particularly the Keys. Who wants a 6.5 draft that needs to get worrisome when you get to 9-10 foot of water?
I think Jimmy is a keen 'flats guy'....(likes to sport fish the salt water flats).
|
BTW, I've experienced that huge flats are down there, and the very shallow, continuous reef that defines its southern edge. Had to walk along that reef for a considerable distance just to try to find a spot where we might walk a 38' foot powerboat with less than a 3 foot draft across. Never found one.
Your blog spot looks quite intersting, I'm going to have to visit it again when I have a bit more time.

If he wants to simplify his life he didn't have to build that monstrosity of a resort on Hollywood beach. Just a pet peeve of mine, no offense to anyone but Jim.

Fish burgers in paradise.... But nowhere in that link did they specify speed under power?

Since it is still a displacement sailboat, don't you think it might be limited to hull speed?

Interesting observation from a fellow who lives in Singapore...

I smell a sponsor deal
Nothing wrong with that, but it does explain some of the issues mentioned here.
Side note: loved the "great for growing tomatoes" comment, made me laugh out loud. As in, for real

Re: Jimmy Buffett just bought a New Sail/Gamefishing Boat,
Their metric conversion sucks! draft 0.65m is a bit over 2 ft. But in imperial they say over 6 ft. Which is correct??? 2 ft really is shoal draft....

Re: Jimmy Buffett just bought a New Sail/Gamefishing Boat,
There is a trunk on centerline in the salon that suggests a lifting keel. Couldn't find any text to support that idea.
Details will come soon maybe. Not sure they have begun the build of #1. Though I did see a pic of a mockup of the deck and salon.
Can't find it now, or the text that stated use of 75hp engines, motoring at 9 knots, and easily reaching double digits sailing.

On the actual spec sheet (.pdf) draft is given as 6.5ft/1.98m and an optional lifting keel is mentioned. I wouldn't mind sipping a mojito in the cockpit of that baby, or even taking it out for a sail .

Interesting observation,...and that might make sense.

How is it that all of these displacement monohulls can now 'easily reach double digits under sail'. I think they are feeling market pressures from multihulls.

Re: Jimmy Buffett just bought a New Sail/Gamefishing Boat,
Optional lifting keel, I see that now in the pdf.
21" 4 blade bronze folding props. Volvo 75hp engines.
Double digits sailing, read that in a write-up about the boat. Not from the manufacture if I call correctly. Author must have been psychic since the boat doesn't exist yet. The formula yields a smidge under 9 knots as hull speed.
I still get a thrill from the lifted windward hull on my Hobie18 skimming the water's surface. So not a cat hater. But it wasn't my intention to bait any mono haters with the double digit statement. My apologies to the forum if another unnecessary drift begins.
