Butyl rubber sealant with non-thru bolts?

I've read through Mainesail's primer on bedding gear with butyl. Am convinced that's a great way to go for many applications. One nice thing is that it seals right away since it has no cure time. But it is recommended to tighten the fasteners over a several day (or longer) period. Keeping that in mind, can butyl rubber be used in applications where the fasteners doesn't penetrate the hull or deck? For example, on our Catalina 30 some cabin-top hardware (deck organizers, winches, etc.) is anchored by nuts embedded in the core. If you tighten these bolts over a number of days won't the seal between the BR and the bolt be broken?

Happy sailing, everyone!!

Re: Butyl rubber sealant with non-thru bolts?

Butyl remains pliable over time. For this reason you want the joint to bottom out so you can torque the fasteners. Once torqued there is no need to retension to maintain the seal using butyl.

If your joint relies on the compression between the butyl and the fitting and parent material you run the risk of squeezing the butyl out of the joint if you keep tensioning.

If however you are using a sealant that will set, such as life calk, then it is good practice to not fully torque until set. Then torquing will apply compression to the joint thereby effecting a good seal.

Joint design dictates whether buytl is appropriate or not. In all cases the joint load should not alter the compression joint of the sealing material. The key is to not unload the seal (seperate it) or overload it (displace it).

One final note, all elastomers fail from peeling before they fail from tension or compression. No joint should introduce a peeling load or displacement.

We've been using nothing but Butyl tape to bed every piece of deck hardware for years now. It does not matter whether through bolted or screwed in fittings. Unlike traditional caulking and sealant, none of these have ever leaked. Chuck

AnchorageGuy - when you bed a piece of hardware with a screw, do you tighten the screw(s) only once, or more than once over some time period? And this tightening is done by tightening the screw, twisting the butyl stuck to it.

A small amount of butyl is put on the screw but I make a ring of the butyl around the piece of hardware where the screw goes through. The screw is tightened down to where it should be and the excess butyl cut off that squeezes out. I never touch it again. Chuck

I would say that nearly all automobile windshields are held in place by Butyl rubber alone. I've got two cars right now that are over 20 years old that have original windshields in them. I have a friend that had his windows leak on a trimaran, they were screwed on with silicone sealant in between. He finally went to butyl rubber and never had any more problems. Mac

Buytal doesn't cure, so there is no need to partially tighten the joint and then wait for it to cure.

Either it works or it doesn't from day 1.
