1978 2H Sabb ,
keel cooler, 19" two blade pitching prop.
4100+ hours on it - per manufacturer, barely broken in... If you are familiar with Sabbs, skip this paragraph. This
engine is not a marinized
diesel, rather it was specifically designed and built for
marine service and used extensively in
fishing boats and life boats. The Norwegian manufacturer still supports the
motor with
parts. Very popular and respected in
Europe, a favorite in wooden and
classic boats in the US. A serious piece of iron that happily thumps away at 200 to 1800
RPM with max 2200. Because of the pitching prop design there is no forward or reverse
transmission, rather it has a
clutch with a simple integral mechanism that allows for the helmsman to change the
pitch of the
propeller blades - at any speed and
RPM you can adjust for optimum
pitch. And by fully flipping the blades the
boat will go in reverse - the
engine is never taken out of
gear. It truely uses its 18hp most effectively with the pitching prop and at cruising RPM brings a real 16hp and 87 ft lbs of torque to the
propeller (2x1 reduction gear). Our 22,000 lb 35ft waterline sailboat gets pushed in excess of 6 knots in flat
water and no
wind. The engine weights about 400lbs, pickup or
shipping is from SF area.
The engine and drive train are in very good condition with
work done in 2013 (@4000 hours) including:
- valve job,
-
fuel pump rebuilt,
-
raw water and
cooling pumps rebuilt,
- new shaft coupling,
- new front crank
shaft seal and seal ring,
- new
fuel injectors,
-
fuel lines,
-
head gasket,
- thermostat,
-
oil pressure
sensor,
- engine mounts, and
- a
paint job.
2016 we replaced the drive train from the coupling aft and there are less than 50 hours on it since
- new prop shaft,
- new shaft log,
- new propeller.
The instrument/engine wire loom (12 ft long) was also completely redone, down to replacing the pins in the plugs. All the wires are an uninterrupted run with no splices or solder connections.
The engine starts without hesitation even in colder
weather (low 50s - sorry does not get that cold in SF) without use of the glow plugs. Runs great, sounds great, no smoke and does not burn
oil.
There is an extensive inventory of new and used spare
parts, easily in excess of $2k. This includes spare prop blades (4 sets), new fuel lines, new spare injector, governor rebuilt kit, starter
rebuild kit,
water pump rebuild parts (diaphragms and valves), thermostat, full set of gaskets, spare
water pump">raw water pump, etc. A list is available upon request.
This engine was lovingly maintained by the original owner for most of its life, the second owner did it no good or harm, we are the third owner and think we've gotten it back to the condition it deserves to be in. Currently it is still in the
boat - I am in the process of documenting it and then taking it out in the next month or so.
The engine will be provided complete for
installation with the exception of water supply hoses and associated
gear,
cooling hoses to connect to the
keel cooler,
exhaust hoses and water
lift muffler.
Given the condition of the engine and parts that come with it, $3500 is a fair
price.
