pirate Just Can't get GPSD to work.

Hi Guys,

First post.

I´ve been trying to get OpenCPN working for a few months. Trying to run it on a Pi3 using OpenPlotter as the OS.

It seems to be a GPSD issue. Used their trouble shooting tried this command;

gpsmon /dev/ttyAMC0
gpsmon:ERROR: device open failed: No such file or directory - retrying read-only
gpsmon:ERROR: read-only device open failed: No such file or directory
gpsmon: activation of device /dev/ttyAMC0 failed, errno=2 (No such file or directory)

yet AMC0 is the tty as reported by;
tail -f /var/log/syslog

Itś Log and lsusb are below.

Ive reinstalled this system about a dozen times, really. Cant get data from GPSD, can get GPS MNEA with a drect conect but that dorsnt help with the rest of the NMEA date.

Thanks,
Emmett

Re: Just Can't get GPSD to work.

You are using /dev/ttyAMC0 but the correct name is /dev/ttyACM0. Different order of letters M and C.

Re: Just Can't get GPSD to work.

Just learning here! OpenPlotter 0.8/GPS BU353

Direct connection to OpenCPN worked first time - ttyUSB0

In OpenPlotter tab 'USB Manager' to 'Add' the GPS - it prompts for the name and I called it 'ttyOP_gps'.

In OpenPlotter tab 'NMEA 0183', 'Inputs', '+serial' added the gps using the name 'ttyOP_gps'.

Inspector shows the NMEA data streaming in from the gps.

I have not tried to use this data via WiFi yet.

Re: Just Can't get GPSD to work.

Set up the Wireless AP in OpenPlotter, using a USB Wireless Dongle. The data can now be read on a client PC running OpenCPN via WiFi.

Re: Just Can't get GPSD to work.

Thanks Guys,

I can get the GPS NMEA date without a direct serial connection. Now, on to the the rest of the NMEA data flows. Then the WIFI multiplexing to my water proof Droid Table.

Old CPM guy flowed on to DOS, easy as they were so restrictive and limited. UNIX then LINUX was always over my head.

User Manual seems to assume too much of new users. Paint by numbers works well for me. Though the last few weeks of using the terminal has been a good start to a reintroduction of the command line.

Thanks,
Emmett

Next Problem,

How to get to "Tools->Auto Setup Start"?

In OpenPlotter I don't see any option for a Tools dropdown menu. Also, OpenCPN doesn't have the wrench symbol but a cog, I'm assuming this is one of the mods done under OpenPlotter.

As a result, no AIS or 2nd WIFI dongle are listed under USB Manager. I'm assuming if Auto Setup would run then the USB dongles would show in USB Manager. This is the rabbit hole I've been going down for the last few weeks trying to list them via command line.

Thanks, in advance.

You can change this under options->user interface->Toolbar and Windows style->Traditional

Re: Just Can't get GPSD to work.

Thanks Petter,

I got the wrench back but still can't figure out how to get the NMEA data. I can hear the audio from OpenPlotter SDR-AIS. In OpenCpn rtlsdr fails to open, I'm assuming because OpenPlotter's SDR-AIS is already running.

So in OpenCPN I'm assuming I have to add a connection to receive the data from OpenPlotter NMEA 0183 output? (Kink of like Windows Comm Ports?) or do I have to add a new serial port but everything is grayed out. So I'm guessing tty Auto Setup would discover the connected USB and give me options. So back to where I started, how do I get tty auto setup to run so USB manager can see what's attached?

Old Dog new tricks, I'm tracking the scent but I'm kind of slow.

Thanks,
Emmett

Re: Just Can't get GPSD to work.

Emmett, you're nearly there!

For GPS output via WiFi:
In OpenPlotter on the tab 'WiFi AP' tick 'Enable access point'. Under 'Access point device' you should be able to select 'wlan0' if you are using the built-in WiFi (pi3) or 'wlan1' if you have a WiFi dongle attached(pi3).

On the right hand side of that tab page you see the addresses to use for WiFi connections (and also the address for controlling your pi by a VNC client!).

In OpenCPN on your remote machine open 'Tools'. ->Add Connection -> Network -> TCP. My remote pc uses Address: 10.10.10.1, DataPort: 10110.

If you are not using a WiFi dongle on the pi and using a WiFi router you do not tick 'Enable access point'. Use 'Sharing internet device' and select 'wlan0'. The address to use in OpenCPN remote (for me) is '192.168.1.3', port '10110'.
