Re: Source of large Stainless Screws?

Um, wood screws? For a cleat? Bolts perhaps? Either way, MSC Direct, Mcmaster Carr, Bolt Depot. And if you do a search here on the forums using fasteners & bolts as your search words, especially in thread titles, you should get a lot of hits.

Though if you just need a few, you're going to pay more in shipping then the fasteners cost. So shopping local may be the way to go. Even if it means using Bronze instead.

And in an emergent situation there's always West Marine, & Defender. Plus of course there's the old school method. Ask a neighbor, or Home Depot.

Re: Source of large Stainless Screws?

Hi Uncivilized,

Thanks for a quick comeback.

Yeah, the toe-rail cleats on my old Rasmus are held on with SS screws. They've survived about 40yrs of use so I think the design may be ok

I've searched all over the interweb, and #14 seems to be the biggest available.

I thought someone may know of a source.....

I gave it a quick look and they may have what you need. Couldn't really nail it down because you didn't ID what type head you were looking for.

Re: Source of large Stainless Screws?

I have used regular threaded screws before. Drill and tap the threads. I suspect they will hold better than wood screws.

A company called Fastenal carries about any size you could need. They have stores just about everywhere in the US and prices are much better than your local West or hone Depot.

Yep Fastenal has stores all over the US. I specify 316 SS and they almost always have to order those but delivery is usually just a day or two.

Re: Source of large Stainless Screws?

How about coach bolts? They come in a variety of sizes? I have also used stainless steel batten screws around that size?
Cheers

Re: Source of large Stainless Screws?

Thanks to everyone for their advice.

Uncivilized - you were right. The fitting isn't a cleat, it's actually a fairlead mounted on the toerail.

The screw holes mean I need either flathead or oval head screws. Hex heads wouldn't do.

Kenbo has the right of it - I can get slotted head S/S screws in #16 x 2-1/2 size, but I'd really prefer Phillips

I've tried all the industrial & retail outlets I can find on the Web - no luck for #16 .
I think I'll plug/epoxy the holes and go with #14 size
