Mainsail rigging on a hunter 23

Hi all.
Pretty new to sailing. Bought a 1986 hunter h23 towards the end of last summer, and sailed it as much as I could.

Got it in the water Friday, and got the mainsail installed. There are 2 things I can't remember for the life of me, and internet searches come up zero.

The mainsail foot is held in place on the boom by a metal carrier at the leech, and a little roll that runs the length of the boom.

At the end of the boom, there are 3 sheets. I know one is the topping lift.

What I can't remember, is 2 things. Is the clew and tack grommets supposed to be attached to something? And if so, does the clew attach to one of the sheets that runs through the boom and up front? Or are they just tied to the boom with a bit of rope?

Or is the foot of the mast just held in by the slot?

Thanks, sorry for the noob question.
