1981 Hunter Cherubini 27' - Hull number?

I'm looking at purchasing a Hunter Cherubini 27.

According to data that I've found, there were 2000 of these boats made between 1974 and 1984. I've also been able to decipher the hull number to a certain degree, but my question is about the actual serial number part.

The full HIN is HUN54924M81E.

I know HUN is for Hunter, and I know that 81E means that it was made in December of 1981. But my question is about the 54924M part.

Usually the 54 would be the model number, but the boat I'm looking at is a 27.

So is this hull number 549, or 924, or neither??

Right... but there were only 2000 27's made over a ten year period.

So is it hull number 549, or 924, or 5? In other words where in the 2000 made does this hull fall?

Ah! OK, now I understand what you are asking for. I also have an '81 27 and my HIN, like yours also starts with "54" followed by "864" so maybe the first two digits are a manufacturers code for the production run? Just guessing here but it kind of makes sense (at least to me).

John Cherubini's son (J.C. II) is active on the Hunter sailboat owner's site (using his boat's name: Diane of Burlington). You might try contacting him and asking for some clarification.

the first three letters is MFG code the second 4 numbers are the serial number the letter number designation is the date of certification the last 2 numbers are year built

I understand that, but we were trying to figure out what number hull out of the 2000 built is my/our boats.
