My boyfriend is looking for a crew to cross the Atlantic from Norfolk (Virginia, USA) to the Azores. Start around June 20, 2018. The journey will last 20-25 days. The boat is a Jeanneau Sun Rise 34.

Will your boyfriend cover travel expenses?

At the risk of sounding harsh, it’s your boyfriends boat, and he wants to get it across the ocean, and he’s asking for help. All the costs, food, water, fuel, should be paid by him, and he should at least pay for the crew to get home. What am I missing?

He's looking for someone who wants to go to the Azores while gaining sailing experience. At that season, the Azores is full of sailors going to Portugal, France or England so it can be a good starting point to visit Europe.



I guess that you're not familiar with the sailboat hitchhikers' world.

If he cannot write his own crew recruitment request is he competent to skipper the trip?

Does the boat have the necessary safety equipment?

If you wanna know the details he's currently sailing from Florida to Virginia with few internet access.
I should be on the boat with him but unfortunaltely had to go back home (in Belgium) for health issue. I've been operated two weeks ago and cannot take a plane to join him for now.
We started our journey in October 2017 from France. We crossed the Atlantic eastbound in January. The boat has all the necessary safety equipment, included a safety beacon with integrated GPS designed to operate with the COSPAS-SARSAT international Search And Rescue system and a satellite phone (Iridium GO).

There’s nothing unusual in the OP request for crew. When most need crew, myself included, persons are expected to cover their own travel costs and share food expenses unless unless working for a paid delivery service.

Understanding how cruising and crewing works is what your not understanding. It works for both parties, they get different things out of the experience.

For once I agree with Ken ;-)

The owner is supplying the boat and meeting the running costs, volunteers get to travel across an ocean and gain valuable experience for what ought to be minimal costs. After all they would have to feed themselves anyway.

Oh to be a long haired hippy student with no worries, just grab the passport and jump on another adventure.

Just the experience and arrangement a newbie like me would've wanted. Unfortunately, I'm no longer the young long haired hippie.

I get it, and it probably does benefit both. But how about your friend or neighbor, or in this case a complete stranger, says Hey Pete, I need some help this weekend putting deck on the back of my house, and if you want to come help, you’re gonna have to bring your own lumber and nails.
It just seems that this is the norm for crew requests these days, and they rub me a little like a Go Fund Me does...

It is a great chance for gaining miles and experience but Horta like Las Palmas in the Canaries can be similar.. folks walking the docks looking for a ride across.. those who've been kicked off their original boat as untolerable for one reason or the other.
If your an American who goes for this you want Terciera.. at least there you can get a direct flight back to the States if walking the docks dont work.. and usually it does not.. unless your a hot chick and stumble across a desperate singlehander..

Your going to be looking at about a $1,500 plane ticket.
