Transport of used boat stuff from Panama to Papeete
Hi everybody,
we sold our previous boat in Panama and found another one in Tahiti. We had to leave about one cubic meter of approx. 250kg boat material (mostly tools and spare parts) in Panama and are wondering if anybody has an idea how to get that to French Polynesia in a most reasonable way.
Any good proposals are appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
Eva

Ship it.
Beware import duty&taxes in Panama. I remember it was very steep back in 2004.

See if another cruiser doing the run if they will transport it to you. Worth a check.

Re: Transport of used boat stuff from Panama to Papeete
Contact a freight forwarder/agent who services Frech Polynesia. Surface transport (ship) is generally inexpensive, but duties and junk fees can add up. The agent should know the details for FP.
Note that many countries have laws on the books at least (actual practice varies) for no or reduced duties if shipping to a yacht in transit. In Panama for example, shipments to a yacht in transit can get by with only 2% duty...if done properly...so best to work with an agent who knows the local drill.

Re: Transport of used boat stuff from Panama to Papeete
We shipped a lot of stuff into Tahiti a few months ago.
It was duty free, but cost about $150-250 in various fee's for each shipment. Kevin at Yacht Services Nuku Hiva was excellent at helping me via email, and Tahiti Crew worked very well for other folks. We were caught in a few bureaucratic complexities: anything with a radio in it, even a WiFi access point or satellite phone, needed extra paperwork and fee's. I heard stories where the customs fees were charged for each 'invoice' in the package: so it's better to make a master invoice that includes everything, rather than have a few separate ones.
The paperwork tended to add about five business days to receiving the package, once it was in Tahiti. However, I think these folks are only applicable if you are shipping it yourself via DHL or FedEx.
For your needs, you'll probably want it to go with a shipping agent. Some neighbors at the marina used one to send in a new Yanmar engine for ~$1k, via air freight.

Thank you guys,
we are a boat in transit in FP and will most likely use the agents mentioned above although we would prefer to find another cruiser heading from Panama to FP/ Tahiti and willing to take our stuff with them.
Do you know anybody by chance or do you know any contact for that?
Thanks Eva

It would be very foolish to transport someone else's things across a border. That's as stupid as taking someone else's suitcase on a plane ride.

Really well I guess i am foolish then. I have been making a living transporting other peoples items for many years.
A proper inspection of goods prior to onloading is always a good idea even for your own ships stores.

Me to. I've moved dinghies, outboard engines, washing machines etc etc. Over years. I'll continue to do so as well - I just require to know what I'm carrying.

Re: Transport of used boat stuff from Panama to Papeete
This is the low season for folks sailing to French Polynesia... But it couldn't hurt to out up a notice at Shelter Bay Marina, the Pacific Puddle Jump email list, and maybe the Panama Cruisers FB page...

Curious as to the reasoning behind your reply? Yes, I might be Leary of taking an uninspected crate, but I don't think this would be the case. ???
