Considering the earlier posts it should probably go without saying, but if you want to install your own mooring don't do it without permission in an area that consists of actively managed submerged lands, such as a mooring field or a controlled harbor like they have in many parts of New England.

There are options to get around "permanent" mooring. Take a look at Skrew Moorings they are a "temporary" solution. A skrew mooring can replace a much larger concrete mushroom mooring and it is classified as temporary.

So, basically, you would be creating a submerged hazard for any boats that come by. No offense, but I think that is an absolutely HORRIBLE IDEA!

If you are that set on not following the rules to get a legal mooring, why not just anchor?

LOL. Ok Don, Markotix say he wants a mooring within an hours drive of Houston. Why not do us a favor and tell us what the rules are?
For that matter, what are the rules in Tampa Bay?

Re: Setting-Up a Permanent Mooring in Texas

If I were interested in a permanent mooring for myself, I would find out the rules and happily share them. Since I'm not, I'm not going to bother.

But whether I know the rules or not, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that objects floating just below the surface of the water create a hazard for passing boats. Setting up a situation like that on purpose is, therefore, an absolutely HORRIBLE IDEA!

Seriously. It's not that complicated.

I quite agree. I do think that only has a peripheral connection to this mooring thread though.

My way of thinking is that many areas do not have regulations regarding private moorings, and that inquiring about same may result in overly zealous politicians or bureaucrats deciding "Oh boy! Let's make some more rules!".
Or deciding to enforce an existing regulation that nobody thought worth enforcing before.

Those who involve the bureaucracy unnecessarily deserve it.
