How to secure books in their shelves?
Hi there,
Anybody mind showing my wife and I your way of securing your books/items in your bookshelves? We have quite a few unsecured shelves on our boat, and before making our first big trip we'd like to make sure that our boat can take a big hit without losing everything on the shelves. Any suggestions? Many thanks!

Re: How to secure books in their shelves?
We keep a stiff wood batten spanning the length of the shelf that rests in "U" shaped slots at each end. Our batten fids are about five inches above the shelf base and are easily raised to remove or replace items.
Although we use these for books, we also use them for many other shelved items.
... even glassware.

Thanks for the reply! You wouldn't happen to have any pictures of the brackets themselves would ya?

Fiddles or even bungy cords.
Even better get a cat. Other than a small lip at the bottom of the shelf, nothing holds our books in place. They just stay there (I'm sure in perfect storm conditions it might be an issue but we've never had a book get free)

How do you use the cat?... last time tried to use the ship's cat like that it tried to claw my eyes out and then jumped ship.....
I stop the 'bottle rattle' with those sleeves they put duty free booze bottles in at airports... that and kitchen paper which also works well...
My 'glass rack' started life as a cassette rack in the 80's, moved on to holding CDs ( sideeways) in the 90's , and now does good duty with 'glasses assorted'....

When we had a cat on board it also punctured the inflatable when trying to jump ship. [emoji3]

I believe Kindle has an effective system...

The kindle is a fantastic addition! Yet we still have tons of books like Charlie's Charts, Boat manuals, Jimmy Cornell books, and many many others that we can't get rid of but need a secure home for.

Re: How to secure books in their shelves?
I don't have any photos of the "brackets" at the ends of my wood battens or fids in the photo, but they are very simply "U" shaped cuts of wood screwed to the bulkhead that firmly receive the slats. I believe that I've seem similar fittings in metal that hold curtain rods. Actually curtain rods might be an easy source for what you could use.

I use Calibre and Calibre Companion.
I can download any e-book I have onto any device I choose, without having to connect to Amazon's, Google's, or Barnes&Noble's websites.

We used barrel bolt fasteners to hold the fiddles in place. A small block of wood at one end to keep the fiddle oriented properly with the barrel bolts holding the fiddle in place against it.
Stainless Steel Barrel Bolt 3-7/8" Long
