Where easy to find and get charts and pilotage books?

I'm in the UK, and I want to easily be able to find and buy charts and pilotage books, but having had a go on the internet it doesn't seem as easy as I hoped it would be. So could someone tell me a good way to achieve what I want.

In particular, I want a large-scale chart of the west coast UK area from Fleetwood, Lancashire, and northward to Stranraer, Scotland, and so taking in the Solway. Then I will buy small-scale charts of this area, and also the pilotage books of havens and harbours.

I prefer paper rather than electronic, at this juncture.

So how can I do this, click, click, click, simple?

Thanks.

Any decent chandlery with an online service should be able to help you find what you want.. Piplers of Poole for example..

Re: Where easy to find and get charts and pilotage books?

Can't help you with your query, but just to clarify:

You actually want a small scale chart of the west coast and large scale charts of specific areas.

It confuses a lot of people, but small scale charts cover large areas and large scale charts cover small areas.

Scale is a representative fraction.
A 1:25,000 chart has everything on it 1/25000th of actual size.
A 1:1,000,000 has everything on it 1/1000000th of it actual size.

Since 1/25000th is larger than 1/100000th, the first one is larger scale than the second one.

To put it another way:
The larger the object appears on the map, the larger the map’s scale is.

Re: Where easy to find and get charts and pilotage books?

Thanks boatman. I suppose that is a way. I have been into chandlers but they seem out of stock or a bit perhaps/maybe (hardwork).

I just thought that maybe I could go direct to Imray and easily find what I want and, well, and i know I am not sort of computer logical, but it just seems soooooo difficult to do something that should be sooooooo simple.

StuM, we should get Trump on the job to get it clarified: ' We're gonna clarify chart scales, it's gonna be beautiful. Good charts..great charts..we've gonna change it.. we're gonna make chart scale great again...beautiful...beautiful charts'.

Can they not print some of the requested charts on demand? That, or download them so that you can take the data to a printery that has an XXXL printer.

Try Bookharbour - Nautical Books, Charts & Navigation Equipment, based in Southampton. Official Admiralty Chart Agents but they sell other types of charts as well. I have used them several times, great service.

You might want to look at the Admiralty Leisure folios starting with SC 5613.

StuM is attempting to educate you about a subject you've requested information on but are obviously not very knowledgeable about. Don't be a twat.

These are the guys I use and trust:

They got me everything I needed for an atlantic crossing, no fuss, they have seen it all. They also got me several hard to find cruising guides.

Re: Where easy to find and get charts and pilotage books?

We used to just boldly walk up the gang way of any near by freighter and ask to speak to an officer. Ships often have closets full of older charts that have to be regularly updated in order to keep their Lloyds A1 rating. They often keep the old ones to use as gaskets in the engine room. We've come away with several, world portfolios doing this. It may be more difficult these days with all the security surrounding larger ports.

Re: Where easy to find and get charts and pilotage books?

I sold paper charts for over thirty years. I gave up talking large scale and small scale charts to my customers. If you don't deal with it every day it can be confusing.

I would suggest they buy a big chart to plan their route on and then detailed charts of each place they planned to stop. I avoided using the term scale unless the customer used it first.
