Re: 40' Catamaran (in SE Asia)

I have a 42' catamaran currently located in the Philippines where i am living aboard. It has four queen size berths and space for two composting heads in addition to the cockpit head currently in use. It is a fairly new boat as I have only been sailing it for around two years. Your price seems a tad low for me and I am not yet sure that I want to give it up. If you want to discuss this further I can be reached via email at Bruce626 [at] gmail [dot] com. Hae a good day.

I thought you said a blue water cruiser? If that's what you're looking for, good luck with going up wind or crossing oceans. If it's just a house boat you want with twin pontoons, you'll probably find one.

The Solaris 42 is a very dated design but has crossed many oceans.

Re: 40' Catamaran (in SE Asia)

Wow, you don't want much. First, you want a blue water cruising catamaran 40ft long. Second, you only want to spend $100,000 and third, you want it in a specific location. You want it all and you want it for nearly nothing. Have you ever thought it's a sailing catamaran so you can sail it to wherever you want it? And from French Polynesia to SE Asia would be some of the most beautiful sailing in the world. All down hill with the wind behind you. The reason I suggested this link for you is that some guys get half way across the Pacific Ocean and get sick of it and you can buy a real bargain as most of the boats there are very negotiable. In the Indian Ocean you have the Maldives, you often see cheap boats there. But you probably won't find a good cheap boat in a popular destination. But hey, that's what sails are for, to get you where you need to go. I think you need to look at what your priority is, what type of catamaran, what you can afford and what location you're prepared to go to to pick it up. All the best with your refined search.

Our Captain has suggested we start in the Thailand area because of our Thai connections and wanting to stay in calm waters and stay along the coast until we get use to sailing before we do open crossings..
we understand we might have to sacrifice due to our low budget,, we might have to go with a Monohull.. I'm sure if we find the perfect deal we could figure out a way to be a little flexible on location..

would love to hear more about locations to find the best deals..
sounds like the more "touristy" a spot is, the less deals you will find?

Thanks for that site, that's a great source!

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but with a Captain on board, you should be ready for crossings? Or is he not coming with?

Personally, I get more nervous near the coast then on open water

Captain will be there.. but he's a Rookie Captain..
-sailing school
-captains license
-6 years working as crew/guide/back up captain

I've read articles comparing the risks of open water vs. coastal cruising
,, and understand what your saying how open water can be safer..

we thought we might feel better if we can limp back to help if we get into trouble.. vs running into issues in the middle of no where..

maybe were thinking about it wrong? maybe starting our trip in French Poly
would be fine?

our love for Thailand, lack of Hurricanes and man eating sharks if calling out to us.. but so is our goal of finding a great vessel on a budget..
