Where to sail in August in Greece?

Hi Everyone, We can take the last week of August off work and are looking to charter a monohulll to go sailing in the Med for one week. We were thinking of Greece, as a flight into Athens is easy for us to get (but am open to other suggestions). This is our first bareboat charter and we are looking to get some nm under our belt, hone our skills, but also enjoy a relaxing holiday. I read the meltemi can be an issue for the Cyclades, so I am looking for alternatives that would be bearable in August, regarding tourist numbers and temperatures. Thanks for any suggestions

All Aegean Sea has Meltemi during July and August..so you have yo wake up early and achieve the bay or fishing harbour before 13.00- 14.00.. we all do.. and always be prepared for reefing 😊 To follow carefully of the weather forcasts..best one for this area is Poseidon.. If it says 20knots..it will come 35 afternoon..😀 Kea, Hydra, Andros, Ios, Sefiros..all of them are really nice and not that much tourists.. away from Mikanos type of islands.. and highly recommend to have one Rod Heikell's Greek Waters Pilot Book might be wonderfull when you are sailing around the islands.. Fair Winds and calm seas..

August in Greece is crowded in most 'normal' areas where charters are available. If you want to sail where the meltemi is less noticeable you may choose the Saronic gulf (south of Athens) or the Ionian sea (Corfu and southward toward Lefkas/Cephalonia).

The windward shore Tinos - Gavrio may offer some protection as part of a counterclockwise loop. If it fits your itinerary don't miss Paros.

August in the Aegean - could not be a worse time - first the winds are tough and you need to be patient to work it out with them - second all of Europe shuts down and every one who has a hankering to sail does and it is a mess -
count on crowded anchorages and docks, count on rude sailors who as you are beginning to back into a dock spot cut you off, count on people dropping their anchor across yours and as they leave may even pulling your anchor, - and that is just a start -
unfortunately we are headed that way but plan to make a quick trip with few stops until Crete and Rhodes and then out of Greece -
It is as we heard one charter boat briefer tell a client when the client told the guy that he had been sailing for 15 years - the briefer said oh 15 years at twice a year that means you have almost a year of experience - it did shut the guy up but you get the point -

Right, but many people do not have choice as they get summer vacation from their employers in July-August. For them, it is either charter in that period or stay at home and do not sail at all.
We are retired, have sailed this year all April, May & June in Greece. Now the boat is stationary for July-August and we shall return to continue the sailing in Sept.

Re: Where to sail in August in Greece?

You could charter out of Athens, there are loads of companies operating there, and then explore the Saronic Gulf. Despite what others have said there is no meltemi in the Saronic Gulf, winds are usually light but enough to get you moving. There is plenty to explore - Epidavros (including the Asclepion and theatre), Angistri, Aegina, Methana, Poros, and if that's not enough you could head out to Hydra and Spetses.

A week isn't long to explore the area and if you're looking to mile build you probably want to do a one way charter out to the Aegean islands, then you may have to deal with the meltemi and struggle to get back to Athens.

August is hot hot hot and busier than other times, but the Aegean/Saronic etc is much preferable to the Ionian, where you will feel as if you are in a trailer park at that time of the year!
