The New Vagabond Hits The Water

It's always great to see a new boat in the water,

Some very good drone coverage on this one.

Nice boat! Have to admit I'm a bit confused tho? Is vagabond owned by outremer and they're reviving the brand as catamarans?

It's an Outremer 45 named La Vagabonde, aka the cruising couple who've been posting on youtube for years sailing a Beneteau Oceanis from the eastern Med to New Zealand. Outremer worked out an agreement for them to use the boat for at least 1 year.

Ok, so who can tell me about that masthead? I see what looks like a good 4dB VHF antenna, a Metz or similar stubby probably for AIS, and then two odd looking antennas symmetrically placed out on wings to either side. What the heck are those two? The only thing I could think of what a GPS compass but that looks completely wrong.

I thought it was a 47? But maybe my memory is just a bit fuzzy on the subject.

After sailing a much shorter mono for such a long time, I'm betting they will feel like they are sailing a house (and not a small one at that) when they get on to this fine cat. There's a recent youtube post from Riley, single handeding to NZ, where he muses about how much bigger their current boat seems when it's not healing.

Imagine Elayna cooking without being thrown about as she cooks her vego dishes in a seaway. I'm sure she will appreciate the difference.

The only drawback I can see if that that will be spoiled when their contract is up. Hard to see them going back to a relatively small mono after living on a big, modern cat for 12 months.

Anyway, good luck to them.

Re: The New Vagabond Hits The Water

I just watched one of their videos last night and Riley was talking about when things are a bit rough, the current boat seems small. He was wondering if the catamaran will allow for more movement about the boat.

Re: The New Vagabond Hits The Water

Of course he will. He won't know himself. He said that in weather he set up the sails and planted himself in the seat and didn't move. He'll be able to go inside (unless already inside - I bet he could skipper from inside in that new boat) and get lost in one of the cabins.

My guess is that the tall one is for the VHF, then the two short ones would be for a dedicated AIS and what could be a Wi-Fi antennae.

SO, Do Riley and Elayna get to do the Med again?

I got the impression from something I heard on a social media post that it was some sort of lease-to-buy deal. I'm not sure if they have ever definitively said what the deal was but I got the distinct impression they would end up owning her.

I wonder which way they will sail. Around the cape and into the Indian ocean I would think... Maybe meet up with Delos! Their voyage has just gotten way cooler! I think they are going to be blown away. I can't wait to see.
