Timing question: Delivery Panama - Galapagos - Tahiti - Fiji

Hi,

I see most boats transiting the Panama Canal in March and continuing to Galapagos soon after.

What is the latest time one should be enroute to the Galapagos or even enroute to Tahiti (via Marquesas) from Panama?

Again, question is more aimed towards a delivery and not talking about maximising time on the Pacific Islands.

Thanks for your input,

Carsten

I sailed 2nd week of May if memory serves me well.. passed within close sight and N of the Galapagos arrived Nuku Hiva 37 days later.. someone who went to the E and S took 55 days.. good steady trades once around 5*-10*S
But.. each year is different I reckon..

We transited the Canal 12th June and left Panama a week later.

For the latest transit it really is just working backward from the destination and the start of cyclone season. Where ever you plan to leave the boat for cyclone season that starts in Nov gives you the distance you'll need to cover and then you can estimate the time based on how much of a delivery vs cruise it is and what the boats general performance is. Even the straggler cruisers leave in May and do the rush job.

Mark, Paul,

thanks for the input too. I thought that the beginning of the Cyclone season would dictate the timing but also was not totally sure if the wind pattern would change much in that part of the Pacific between April and July.

Thanks again 'all', have the info I needed now.

Safe sailings,

Carsten
