How NOT to fuel up your boat

A boat exploded near Ocean Isle Beach in NC Friday because, while attempting to fuel up the boat, the owners accidentally put 28 gallons of gas into a fishing rod holder instead of the gas tank!! This is definitely an example of how NOT to fuel up your boat. Thankfully everyone survived, but they are still in a burn center. Prayers!

not how not to fuel your boat but how to prove.stupidity. the gas fill has a screw in cap that says gas on either it or the flange. A rod holder is just an open hole. ( heck even cars have caps and fuel type labels. Sorry people got hurt but that was an.example of painful stupidity. ) wonder how much he owed on the boat and if it was up for repo)

Equally stupid is the guy from Sea Tow who should have known better than to tell the guy to disconnect his battery. They always spark when you disconnect wires! He should have just safely left the boat and given a few hours for the fuel to evaporate, perhaps spray some foam on it from an AFFF

Apparently the gas was sufficient.

Sea Tow's Schwarz arrived and advised the pair to disconnect battery cables so a spark would not ignite the gas.
Uh, wow.

In my neck of the woods, a serious gas spill is a reportable environmental event, and I believe that that much spilled gas in a boat would also be a 911 call because of the fire risk. Was it legal to just leave things in the hands of the owners and a tow company? We now know it wasn't exactly prudent.

Negligence on the owner's part there, I agree.
