Main Sail

Has anyone increased there main sail area by increasing foot length. Luff will remain the same. My main sail is old and tattered and I am looking at a used sail in good shape.

Re: Main Sail

If the boom can take the longer sail -- with the outhaul hard-on -- why not?

Re: Main Sail

The more you add the more you change the ballance of your boat. Adding sail area aft will increase weatherhelm so don't overdue it.

Re: Main Sail

If your boat has negligent weather helm or lee helm, you can do so. But if you are in a sloop with pronounced weather helm, you will get even more weather helm.

Re: Main Sail

It will create a bit more weather helm so I guess it depends on what you have now.... and how much you are adding. The amount of roach will effect that also.
