Harken Easy Sailing, someone tried it?

Hi all,
I knows that Harken created special winches that can control "Autotack" and "Autotrim". I saw it here: Easy Sailing: Harken and Jeanneau debut Assisted Sail Trim (AST) to simplify sailing
Someone of you tried it? Do you think is intelligent?

I'm not sure...

Good grief...

No, I do not think it is intelligent, nor useful, nor safe, nor likely reliable.

A travesty. If you are not going to participate in the saiing, why go?

Jim

Re: Harken Easy Sailing, someone tried it?

I looked for a "1 April" date but couldn't see one. Then I googled "Harken Assisted Sail Trim" and to my horror, I discovered that it is for real!.

More gory details here: http://www.harken.com/uploadedFiles/...e_Jeanneau.pdf

I'm with Jim - it's asking for trouble when conditions change.

I think the whole point is that it is adaptive to the conditions. Basically an intelligent windvane.

I can see the applications for solo voyaging and as they mention, those with limited mobility. Yes it's more complexity, but show your boat to someone from 50 years ago and they'd say the same thing about it. Technology marches on.

I think one real risk is people buying or operating boats larger than they can otherwise handle because of this system. It's an invitation to get out of your depth.

As for the whole participatory thing, to each their own. I do a lot of racing and the fine art of sail trim is slightly holy to me. Not terribly keen about letting a computer do it, but in some circumstances it is probably quite lovely.

Be interesting to see a computer and the necessary hardware to adjust the backstay , cunningham, outhaul, running backstays, traveller and mainsheet for mainsail trim the way we do when we race.

I have one on my boat, Stu. She's called "Ann"!

Eh, I think it is pretty cool. Let me first point out that we already have reliance on autopilots and (at least for larger boats) power winches/furlers. Both have been mentioned by several respected members of this board as essential pieces of equipment on their passage makers. Is connecting the two systems really the straw that breaks the camels back and causes sailing not to be sailing? I don't think so.

It will be fun to see how much better an autopilot can helm the boat when it can also control the sails.

Humans, for the time being, will still need to route the boat!

Wonder how it knows if a guest is sitting with her hand on the jibsheet before it starts pulling it in?

I think winches that can ease under load with the push of a button are a major breakthrough on there own.

Does the system come with a full time technician to keep it working. There are a lot of things you can do with a computer and electronics but none last for long in a heavily campaigned boat. Salt air and circuit boatds don't get along well. If you really feel you need such a system, you can get a much more reliable set up, it's called a trawler.

Thanks for your answers! I understand that Some Jeanneau boats for charter have this system. Sincerely I'm curious and I would try it at least one time.
