Packing lists for sailing

Anyone have any suggested packing lists for sailing on a per day or per week basis. How much do you take with you? What don't you need? What did you need that you hadn't considered?

Thanks. Getting into post retirement sailing?

Re: Packing lists for sailing

Might be a little too open-ended for a decent response. We have lots of lists for all kinds of things that we developed as we got ready to cast off the lines. We have food lists, spare parts lists, lists of things to do to let go of the shore, etc.

It would help if you shared where you plan to cruise and how you plan to do it.

e.g.- food lists for marina hopping down the coast are very different from a trans-atlantic.

I'm sure everyone would be happy to share lots of lessons learned and lists of what they carry if you point us in the right direction.

Packing is personal so not sure how valuable someone elses list will be.

What packing are you referring to? Food, spares, toys, clothes, medical, etc?

Well, the minimum is a credit card tucked in your Speedo, and then you go up from there. ;-)

Yep. The card and some UV block (if going tropics) or some polar fleece (if headed for Ushuaia).

You can basically buy anything everywhere.

Talk to the boat owner you are going with - they will have some good advice based on the situation, area and charter style.

Cheers,
b.

pack 2 small soft-sided bags with things that you absolutely need. Then leave one of the bags at home.

Do you have a water maker? A pressure cooker? A lot depends on what kind of a trip and how long away from land. For long distance cruising we probably had a ton of food, equipment, etc per person and an extra ton for the boat. That is for a 43 foot westsnail.

Re: Packing lists for sailing

Let's start with the boat. I don't know what your sailing or what your motor is but extra engine filters, oil and filter and water pump and water maker parts, Don't forget to top off and make sure your altenater has a spare. new batteries would be nice if they aren't AGM and around 3 years old, open and shut all seacocks before casting off, electrical kit, safety kit, ditch bag, epirb if needed, and extra lines. Sails in good shape and a spare for each.wax ring for plugging leaks, FBR and matt just in case. sewing machine, tool box full of tools, and pipe wrenches, and stainless rod and wire.

That's a start anyway.
