Recommended Clearwater/St. Pete Surveyor?

Hi there,

We are looking for a reputable surveyor for a prospective buy (we already have a contract pending a survey) on a 40' Hunter sailboat in the Clearwater/St. Pete area.

Any recommendations?

Thanks very much in advance!

I've used Jonathan Sands, Atlantic Marine Group. He's a naval architect, marine engineer, marine surveyor, and a very nice person to deal with. Highly recommended.

Thank you, danielamartindm! Do you know if he charges a lot to travel to the St Pete area?

We used Mr Taylor for a survey last year on a 1984 lifting keel sailboat (some not so standard engineering). He was very thorough and we have recently started a full restoration and what we have found is what was in the survey, no surprises!
Super nice guy and willing to answer all our questions during the full day of the sea trial and survey.
Regards Andy

It's been a really long time since we've had a survey. Can you give me an idea of what the current fees are like?

I did not get a chance to use this guy myself, but a retired broker I know recommended him to me if you are buying, and you don't want to see him if you're selling. A stickler for detail, I am told he finds everything. He is a practicing Jew and does not work on Saturdays which messed me up. If you use him, I would appreciate a report back.

Thanks, Andy - I hear he is good but may take about a week to provide a survey. Any idea?

Re: Recommended Clearwater/St. Pete Surveyor?

Upper rigging and detailed motor inspection is often not covered by a general survey. So ask about what specifically does not get surveyed in detail and then if you need a higher comfort level, consider specialists on those items.

He didn't for me, his rates were competitive for surveyors in this area, but he's one of two "pros from Dover" in the area when it comes to cats. You can call and ask what his fee would be, and take it from there.

Re: Recommended Clearwater/St. Pete Surveyor?

Hello from Canada,

My husband and I just bought an 1983 Endeavour CC - 40 feet in the Naples area. We had looked at a Hunter 40 a month earlier in the same area and we had enlisted the services of Captain Kevin Koch, SAMS S.A. from Marine Mentor. (239) 440-2675 on those two occasions and we highly recommend him. The quality of his survey (48 pages), valued opinions, dependability and reasonable price was more than we expected. We highly recommen him.
