Recommended sailing books

I am a newbie of sailing and plan to sail around the world in the future.
I am thinking of attending some courses but also would like to get some ideas about the routes sailing around the world.

Can anyone recommend a good book for 'sailing around the world' for reference?

I have been overwhelming of the sailing books. May I ask why the 'World Cruising Routes' is a good choice?

Is it suitable for a newbie?

Because 90% of the others doing what you want to will be doing those routes and visiting those places so there'll be lots of company..

Well, the book is recommended based on what you said you wanted " I would like to get some ideas about routes sailing around the world".

This book will not teach you to sail but will give you a starting guide for getting to where you want to go.

If you are looking for sailing instruction The Annapolis Book of Seamanship is a great choice.

The Jimmy Cornell books are excellent references for routing but they are technical (meaning they focus mostly on weather patterns, currents etc).

I have read about every "I want to sail around the world" book on Amazon (my budget is happy there is a Kindle Unlimited program). These really opened my eyes to the different "flavors" of sailing around the world (types of areas I might like, schedules that seem to fit my desire, challenges of being inexperienced on the water etc). Some notables (IMO):

Along Together - Christian Williams
The Unlucky Sailor - Harry Birch (maybe an example of what not to be)
One Lousy Pirate - Doug Walsh
Bumfuzzle - Patrick Schulte
Sailing Alone Around The World - Josh Slocum

A lot of these show the common routes through areas, for example, the Coconut Run in the Pacific, Caribbean sailing etc.

Apart from the Annapolis Book of Seamanship, any recommended Basic and Sailing theory books?

Before attending any classes, I would like to read some fundamental and theory sailing books. It would help me to have better understanding as I am really dump in all the sailing and boat terms.

What classes or training must I attend to learn sailing for a newbie? I don't want to spend so much money to attend all classes/training due to the budget. Just only look for the necessary training and then get on a boat to practice the sailing skills.

Any suggestions would appreciate.

Sailing Around the World Alone, by Joshua Slocum. The first to do it.

There are lots of these posts, but Sailing for Dummies seems to come up a lot. Really.

Go to your local library or Amazon.com and look for books by Hal Roth, Eric Hiscock, Don Street and read. They are not full of style or even much adventure, but they will teach you (in a very conservative way) how to set up a boat for around the world. Cornell is good, but you need to know the nuts and bolts of sailing before you really decide where to sail. It is a really wonderful life, but it is not the easiest of ways to live. _____Grant.

I would forget the Jimmy Cornell stuff. That is all available for free online. Expensive and overpriced, not very useful. Especially if you are not at the route planning stage yet. If you are into route planning you should do it yourself an not use his plans which are mostly taken from sailing directions and perhaps a single visit. Better to use the advice of locals or more thorough works such as the Sailing Directions (downloadable for free from the NGA website).

The Admiralty publication "NP136 Ocean Passages of the World" is more useful - get one of the old versions that come with the route charts.

As for preparing a boat for ocean passages and cruising in general I like some of Fatty Goodlander's books such as "Storm proofing your boat" and his anchoring one.

Bernard Moitessier's "A sea vagabonds world" will give you a lot of really practical tips.

John Vigor has a few good ones too such as "A Seaworthy Offshore Sailboat".

Others have already mentioned Hal Roth etc..

you will need to learn maintenance skills; see Nigel Calder, Don Casey etc..

Those are some of my favourites ... there are of course the classics such as "Heavy Weather Sailing" but you'll get more nuggets of info from books similar to those I have listed above.

Learn to cook.. You'll get more value from good provisioning and providing you and yours with good food for your sailing trip around the world than many of the intricate arguments about whether you should have mast steps or not; or whether to leave on 21 June or 3rd July.

Avoid high summer in the tropics (to stay out of the way of hurricanes) and you won't go far wrong.
