I haven’t seen mention of it elsewhere on these
forums, so I will be the one to share the sad news; a young woman, Sara King, has drowned aboard a
catamaran in a storm about 240 miles off
South Africa. I didn’t know her, but all reports indicate she was a great person who was researching plastic waste in the
Indian Ocean. My condolences to the bereaved.

I do have some technical questions about this sad incident though; from the sounds of the (sparse on details) article, she drowned on board after the
boat started taking on significant
water.
A 48 footer is a pretty big cat. Someone can drown in a puddle if they’re unconscious, but otherwise it seems implausible that there would not be adequate reserve floatation on a cat this size to maintain an air pocket, upright or inverted.
Given that the news shared few details, and this story will likely disappear soon, I’m hoping for details about the
boat, and the storm, anything that might help prevent a similar tragedy.
