Suggestions for books and videos

Good day,
Im looking for suggestions for youtube videos/pages, audio books, paperback/hardcover books, or basically anything that is sailing related that i can either learn from or may find intresting. Im very new to sailing and eager to learn all i can. Im certainly learning lots off the forum but its nice to switch it up every now and then.
Thanks

Re: Suggestions for books and videos

Wow - I think this is a loaded question!......I am sure you will get almost as many different responses as "what's the best anchor!".......anyway, I will go ahead and offer up an opinion - mainly on videos. But first it depends on what interests you the most. Are you interested in the technical aspects of sailing/cruising? looking for more information about cruising life? or interested in the travel/destinations? My recommendations would be different depending upon your answers. But here are a few suggestions.

I became a sailing YouTube addict several years ago when I started to get interested in cruising. And I wanted a mix of technical, boat preparation, and destination info. With that in mind, I generally found that some of the earlier stuff by some of the better-known YouTubers better met my needs. I've found that as popularity increases, the content of some productions moves more towards cute girls, tiny bikinis, and wild partying (yes, I am thinking of SV Delos). And there's nothing wrong with that - its entertaining and they are supporting their lifestyles that way. But here are a few suggestions to check out:

- check out www.thesalingchannel.tv This perhaps has the best selection of "pure sailing". Some of the content is quite old, but its good stuff
- watch some of the early Drake Paragon on YouTube. I loved his early stuff, but his later material just doesn't have the same excitement or appeal to me
- Trio Travels (YouTube) is a good mix and a great family story....and it often ends with a cute bikini
- early SV Delos
- early SV La Vagabond
- Distant Shores is excellent for travel/cruising destinations, but more of a travel show with a sailboat thrown in.

I hope that gives you a couple of starting points. I also listen to several podcasts while on long drives - favorites here are: The Sailing Podcast; On the Wind; and Sail Loot......and if you get really bored and need something to send you to sleep, you can also check out my blog and videos!

Good luck and Fair Winds!
Neil

Re: Suggestions for books and videos

Skywalker,

Welcome. As you can imagine, "what books?" is a recurring question. I recommend a search for "books" and you can read about suggestions folks have had here literally for weeks.

I don't "do" videos, so can't help you out there.

Good luck, it's fun reading.

Re: Suggestions for books and videos

One of the best and most comprehensive guides to that anxiety inducing procedure of docking and un-docking a sailing boat in a marina is on a Utube video by the Annapolis Sailing School...Captain Bob. It tells you step by step how to get in and out of a berth in all conditions.....a must see video!!

Of course, there are times when all cruisers have ticked off enough tasks on their "to do list" of maintenance and repair that tey can afford the time to enjoy a good read and there is no greater pleasure than to get into one of the fifteen or so books featuring Captain Jack Aubrey of the British Navy ( the first book "Master & Commander" was made into a film starring Russell Crowe as Aubrey ). Patrick O'Brien, the author, has a magnificent eye for detail about all things to do with early naval ships and on board regimes plus a very DRY sense of humour!!

Bit dated now and dont now if there is an audio versin but I found Larry Pardy, cost conciose cruiser (particularly the idea of the unstopable boat) and storm tacktics on sea anchors and ridy out big storm very useful. You probable wont agree with all of it but he takes you back to basics and makes you think! Plus all the others mentioned above

Re: Suggestions for books and videos

Excellent, thanks for the recommendations so far. I havent had time to check them all out but i definitely will. My personal favorite youtube chanel right now is Erik Aanderaa with " no ******** just sailing" not really to much info and technical stuff more so just inspirational. Hes doing exactly what i want to do, which is sailing the northern Atlantic alone. I also love his boat, a late 70s contessa 35, so far its my favorite boat i know of so far. John kretschmer had a contessa 32 and speaks very highly of it aswell and its a boat thats in my price range and very sea worthy.

I also like the drake paragon channel on youtube, one of the better ones imo.

Ive listened to the john kretschmer's audio book " sailing a serious ocean" which is very informative and interesting.

Ive also listened to both of the Christian William's books, which are pretty informative. I like his personality and how he reads the books, it keeps it entertaining.

The only paper books ive read so far are my asa 101+103 texts which are very informative.
