Dual Wind Vanes Catamaran

Have there been studies and results published or anecdotal...theoretical modeling, water tanks, actual, etc...using two wind vanes..one each hull.

there would be no point as the twin rudders are linked

Re: Dual Wind Vanes Catamaran

I guess the best reason is so that the vane gets strong apparent wind. The only testing I can see was done by David Lewis on Rehu Moana. This was the first cat to circumnavigate in the early - mid 60s. Google images of it and you will see twin vanes on each stern

Newick racer 3 Cheers was set up this way too. The idea is to get the vane in clear air away from the cabin and sails. You are of course only using one vane at a time. The reality is lots of development didn't happen after electronic autopilots improved.

Three Cheers was a trimaran, not a cat.

Very true, That is why they called it 3 Cheers instead of Double Hurrah. One vane on the wing near each ama hull, 2 of those on a trimaran. Got a picture somewhere.

Re: Dual Wind Vanes Catamaran

It's been done, however in addition to the issues mentioned above, there's also the problem of apparent wind speed & direction changing by a lot, as well as very quickly on all but the slowest multihulls. And vanes don't deal with that well. You could slow a multi down to monohull speeds, & they'd be viable. And the one on/for Searunner trimarans supposedly works well.

Go to outrig media, Jim Brown & John Marples site, & download the Searunner construction manual. It details the vane setup for those boats, including how to build one.
