Lagoon VolvoPenta Self Starting

Currently on Lagoon 38-Volvo D1-30, Starboard engine is self starting at random times. I've had 4 other Volvos on various Cats, with the same problem. This problem is deep in the Wiring loom. Anybody else had this issue with results?

You may need a diode across the start solenoid, or the old diode is blown out. The diode conducts voltage spikes past the relay windings so they can't close the contacts.

Re: Lagoon VolvoPenta Self Starting

First I've heard of it in D series engines, but is not uncommon in MD2020-30-40 series and TAMD series.

Generally seems to be rooted in the multipin connectors and the small wire sizes employed by Volvo to operate their relays; eventually, probably because of corrosion in the small crimped elements within the connector itself, heat is generated, which then leads to melting/cracking and thus shorts.

Try looking for hidden connectors near the engine, disassemble and inspect them, if you find one shorted, the surest fix is to cut it out and splice all the wires separately. I always solder and heat shrink them, but do what you're most comfortable with...don't want to start yet another war with people who know more than me...

I had two shorts in the main connector between the instrument panel and the harness; fixed those with insulated spade connectors (again, crimped and soldered) to maintain disconnectability, for insurance added a switch that kills all power to the engine.

Many moons ago when I first left school I worked as a mechanic in a agricultural dealer, we had a spate of compact tractors starting in the middle of the night. Turned out to be water in the ignition switch from rain. Which it did a lot in the north of England... sounds like Volvo have identified an issue so follow their advice. I was just throwing it out there...

Regards Steve

Re: Lagoon VolvoPenta Self Starting

Hello, I believe I have located the ShortCircuits that caused the issues.Lagoon used 3 wiring harnesses from Control Panel to D1-30 engine, Stbd.(3m,3m,5m)
At the junction hidden behind the Port cabin wall(1+2 looms)A few of the Female posts have slipped back into the Plug,in a very thin area to ShortCircuit with each other. With 16 wires, this causes various havoc...
After all the work to extract the looms for T/S,Patching a repair is not feasible... Sorry that all VP's use these CannonPlugs... Careful non tension assembly, and routing should give many years of service, one new loom is cost effective. In closing,These yachts are not constructed for Future Repairs..Period. It's Our Job.
Thanks, <saylpal@yahoo.com>
