sailing from Phuket Thailand to San Diego Ca.
Dear Fellow sailors,
I hope to be sailing a boat from Phuket Thailand to San Diego Ca. this year.
I have never sailed the Pacific and need some help on best route and best time of year. I will also need some crew who has experience.
Would like to know the crew cost and estimated cost to get the yacht to San Diego.
I am in no hurry so the trip can be planned around any weather systems etc...
We can also make stops along the way.
Thank you for the help and advise.
Mike

Depending on when you depart I would love to talk to you further about your voyage but I only have the first half of October open.

Caver Cop,
Thank you for your interest. The trip will most likely take 2-3 months but if I am ready and you want to come on a leg that might work.

How about going the other way? You may enjoy it more and may be safer. Go closer to land initially and then go across the Atlantic (which I'm assuming is easier/safer to cross than the Pacific) and then go across the Panama Canal? I'm positive you can get a lot of input from the forum members on crossing the Panama Canal. And if not, then I can put you in touch with some people that can help you out

Cool Hand Luke,
My only concern would be the Suez canal with all the piracy near Yemen and Somalia-but I agree would be shorter sail. I actually want to end up in Florida East Coast so crossing the Atlantic works.
Maybe some other cruisers can comment on the risk of navigating the canal and into Europe.
Thanks for the comments.

About 8000 NM via Japan v 14-6000 via Panama (depending on whether you go via SA of Red Sea).

In that case, via South Africa to Florida makes more sense, Via Japan or SA both work out at around 12000 NM.

Put it on a ship, the cost it not that much more, and the crossing is boring unless you are a big time fisherman. IMO

Either way will have its hardships. If you don't mind weeks of cold and only have 2-3 months (some of which will be taken by preparation before leaving the dock), go North Pacific as you have the good boat for it. For the North You will need an experienced crew of 2 more, whereas for the other way you could get by with less experience but you'd need more time.

Dolphin360,
I forgot to mention that I will be sailing a trimaran. Thank you. Cost by ship is about $80K!!! Was thinking that sailing her would be about 50% considering wear and tear.

Waterman,
What do you mean by north pacific? Go to Japan and further north?
Forgot to mention that I will be sailing a trimaran.

Sticking to the ITCZ does work at certain times of the year crossing the Indian Ocean. It does require quite a bit of motoring! I would be interested to hear what others say about the pacific which is probably quite different.

Re: sailing from Phuket Thailand to San Diego Ca.
Did this in the 80'S, crewed on a new Motor sailer built in singapore, we did a great circle route, Singapore to Long Beach, CA., took 60 day's, did a lot of motoring, don't remember what time of year it was, but Summer time, caught a lot of Tuna and flying fish on the deck each Morning, great for breakfast, ran into really heavy weather at the most northerly [Seattle] latitude.

SteveG58,
What does IGTZ stand for? What is the Indian ocean like crossing by Madagascar and hugging the Eastern African coast line? I suppose it matters what time of year.
How difficult a sail is it from say Durban South Africa to Cape Town? When is it safest to round the Cape of good hope?
