Hi Gwen, congratulations on starting your build of the Avalon 9. I hope it all goes well for you. It is very exciting when you start to fit the panels as you can see the hull taking shape. My Scarab 32 is coming along nicely, the bulkheads are being taped in the main hull at the moment. Floats and beams are complete, you can see some of the progress at Scarab32Prototype and Ray Kendrick's blog

Your right.
I already did some work on the daggerboard, the rudder, beam mould etc...
But fitting the first panels of the main hull and seeing it take shape is something completely different. @ That moment U can actually see U are building a boat.

After some bad weather (2 weeks worth) I was finally able to continue with the main hull.

I have a question
I'm about to start glassing the hull.
I have to glass each side with 2 pieces of 127cm width.
The question is, how should I do the overlap:


Or any other suggestions are welcome

Are the stepped pieces the glass? Number 2 looks pretty good.

I would do option 2 and also take the outside laminate down the next panel the same amount as the inside skin to create a double layer across the join.
50mm either side of the corner would be sufficient.

I'm assuming #2 is not tapered because it is a wet on wet join ?
I would go with that but move the overlap to cover the ply join.
Don't forget the peel ply.

So I guess it'll be nr 2 with an overlap passing the plywood joint.

What do U mean with peel ply?
Cover the entire hull after laminating with peel ply to get a smoother surface for finishing/flushing/etc... ?

Peel ply;
Several advantages, it soaks up any surplus resin on the surface but best of all it keeps the surface clean while other work goes on, for example if you need to glue in a bulkhead just slash the peel ply with a blade and remove a strip while the rest of the boat stays clean. When it does come time to prepare the surface just rip off the peel ply and no sanding, no blush to wash etc.

Another vote for peel ply. Saves you a ton of work down the track.


You buy it as polyester taffeta. It's cheap, and well worth the little extra effort to apply it.


But you have to get it on while the epoxy is quite wet. If it's starting to tack off, the peelply becomes a nightmare.
