From Galv eastward, there's not much until you get near where Bob and Connie are, or you can stop at Grand Isle (Pirate's Cove Marina, ask for Andy Galliano). If you don't want to sail round the
Mississippi River crowsfoot, you'll have to go inland/ICW/channels. I think most folks do that.
You come out of the lake there into the
Mississippi Sound.
Anchor off the sea islands if you like. Smuggler's Cove (Cat Island) is the only anchorage that's protected in north winds.
Anchoring on south side of islands gets you Gulf fetch unless there's just no
wind, and north side will get rough if there is
wind from east, west or north.
There's harbor at Pass Christian, Long Beach, Gulfport, Biloxi. You can
anchor in the Casino Row channel behind the casinos at Biloxi, just stay out of the marked channel. Water's fairly thin in general in the central Gulf, btw
Continuing eastward, if you stay in the
ICW, you can pop in at Dauphin Island, or go in thru the Mobile Ship Channel and go to DI, or go further in to Mobile Bay and check out the Dog River. If you want to keep on keepin' on in the
ICW after Mobile Bay, you'll have nice places at LuLu's (Buffett's sister's place on the ICW), continue in the ICW and there's a real nice anchorage at Ingram Bayou, or go round the corner to Pirate's Cove.
If you don't go ICW, you can stay
offshore and go in the Perdido Pass channel bridge at 54', or go in to Pickens Pass (Pensacola) and either go left/west in the ICW channel and on the hook behind Fort McRee spoil island, or go northward to Chico Bayou, or eastward toward
Pensacola. The bridge at P'cola is 65', but if you continue east on ICW, the bridge at Navarre is 50', and so is the bridge at Ft Walton.
If you don't go in at P'cola, the next stop will be Destin Pass. The Destin bridge leading to Choctawhatchee Bay is I believe also 50', but Destin Harbor entrance is south of the bridge, just on your right before the bridge.
After Destin, there's
Panama City, Port St. Joe, and the Apalachicola area, which is rather nice but I've not sailed too much there, but there are
anchorages thereabouts.
Most folks around here jump off either from P'cola, Destin, or maybe
Panama City area and cut the corner,
head to Tampa or further southeastward.
I've been using the ActiveCaptain site for info and have found it to be pretty good stuff, btw.
If either of y'all find yourselves in the Miz'sippi area, please PM and I'll be glad to help or just hang out ;-)
