Has anyone seen or been on the Afican Cats FastCat

They seem to make a few models and have some new electric verison and new motor designs I haven't seen before. They sound like they are fast
from what they are build out of epoxy resin and no gelcoat to keep weight
down they spray paint. They seem to have alot of room too. I would
like to see one up close and sail on one. I can't find pricing on them.
They go up to 55ft looks like.

Actually they have a lot of pots in the Multi section lus in the vendor forum. You can also search for fastCat435 since he is part of the company. They seem to be nice boats but it's not because they are cheap. The electric versions use AGM batteries (very nice). The group 4's I bought two years ago are now over $800 US. Batteries are very expensive these days.

I have been on board a 435 at the La Rochelle boat show in 2006. Have not sailed on one.

This was the first of the (I think) 4 boats thay have built to date. As with all boats, don't rely on other peoples opinions, find an owner who will let you visit, without the builder/salesman present. Talk to them and ask questions like:

Did they deliver on time?
Can I see your log book to get an idea of actual performance?
What issues have you had with........????
What have you replaced?
What would you do differently?

I think there is one in Belgium at present, otherwise ask Gideon to link you up with his owners.

After having a look around the boat I decided to design my own, but there are lots of good features in the build of the boat and systems design that Gideon shares openly.

What I didn't like?
The "boxy" look and feel which is totally subjective.
The protrusions between the hulls to make space for the very large beds.
Some of the finish inside could have been better.

Regards

Alan

I've read about the Fastcat 435 (# 3) bought by Frank and his wife Martha from Belgium. You can follow their experiences with the Fastcat on their website : Nieuwe pagina 1 ( dutch and some parts in English )

a recent owner tells his story here :

of Butterfly and Barnacle

Koen

I have. I'm actually spending my first night onboard African Innovation (Hull #1 of the FastCat 435) as I type this. Assuming that everything goes like I think it will with the survey on Thursday, then I will be the new proud owner of this fantastic catamaran.

I started out looking at a variety of cats and asked for assistance on this forum, you can read all about that in this thread: Characteristics of a circumnavigating cat

Basically I had a list of features that I found highly desirable. The FastCat was by far the cat that really hit the mark for me. It might not be true for you, but for me it certainly is. A new one was out of reach for my budget, but a second hand one was ... to be honest not within reach either ... but I went to Amsterdam twice, first to look at her, then to do a test sail ... I was sold, so now I'm making it work. It was simply one of those opportunities that I knew I'd be kicking myself for the rest of my life, if I didn't take it. So like someone on the forum already suggested, I guess I should change my name to Settingsail2008 as opposed to 2009.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Hi Kjartan,

Yes I will. The plan is to stay a year in Stavanger getting the boat and most importantly me ready for the circumnavigation. I should be getting home mid July. It would be my pleasure to show you the boat.

Hi, Andreas,

when do you start your circumnavigation exactly? Maybe we see us on the westbound route and have a direct comparism MANTA 42 vs FASTCAT?
I know for sure that the FASTCAT will be faster, but just in general?
I am planing to leave Florida to Panama in December

Regards

Ralph

Hi Ralph,

I'm plannig to sail across the Atlantic with the 2009 ARC. So anytime after then I'l be in the Caribbean. I'd love to do a direct comparison with the Manta 42, as the Manta was a boat I really liked prior to falling for the FastCat. Though you're starting a year earlier than me, I might be able to catch up If not with your Manta 42, I'm sure I'll get a chance to compare with others. The Manta community on this forum were very friendly and forthcoming when I contacted them with questions, so there are a few Manta owners I'm hoping to meet.

A Fastcat would have been my choice, and at least nothing with front cockpit.

Congratulations with your Fastcat Andreas.

Greetings from Bodoe.
