*****TC Winston Update*****

Radar imagery confirms TC Winston has made landfall now and is on the coast close to Tavua. An updated track forecast has been issued by Nadi warning centre also. TC now expected to parallel the north coast of Viti Levu moving just inland as a Cat 5. This is about the worst of all the worst case scenarios one could dream up. All those living along the coast from Ra to Lautoka and around to Nadi are likely to experience the full force of this category 5 cyclone overnight. One could not dream up a more appalling set of circumstances. Winds near the centre remain around 220 kmph gusting over 300 kmph at times in the inner regions of the circulation around the eye wall. Our thoughts and prayers are with those in harms way tonight in the path of this monstrous tropical cyclone.

Re: FIJI takes a hit!

Oh ****! Have fears for the Fijians and for all the cruisers who have left their boats at Vunda point marina. Guess we will find out if their claims of storm protection were valid... i kinda doubt it. Poor buggers.

Fiji hit by Cyclone Winston Feb 20 2016

Watch the images of this Fiji webcam here on it's Lomaniisland.com page.
Link: Encounter Outright

Click on the center of the page to select noon yesterday, and move your pointer to the right to see the wind picking up at the end of the day. Check again later today and see what is happening as the sun rises. Forecast is 300 kph winds, hope everyone makes it through this!

On the right side there are more camera feeds from New Zealand, push up with your mouse to scroll the list for others like Abel Tasman Anchorage, Silo Marina...

We pray for our friends in Fiji and hope all survive. I fear no place on the water will be safe. There are also several small islands around Veti Levu that cannot handle 200kph winds. We had friends at Musket Cove and I hope they got safely to the main island.

So sad to see the terrible things so many people are going thru all over the world. This will become very commonplace in the near future because the governments of the world choose profits and big business interest over dealing with climate change. I fear there won't be much cruising in this new world we are creating. I think we all know using carbon based energy has to almost completely stop. We are just not willing to do that. Easter Island in a very big way and this time we will take the oceans with us.

That's a nice rant about climate change. The earth has had climate change for millions of years and we aren't going to stop it. Its called weather.

Typhoons, Cyclones and Hurricanes have existed for millennia. The rate or strength of these storms have not increased in recent decades, as some climate fear mongers have predicted.

Forbes Welcome

Climate change has been with us for billions of years. This current event in Java is a tragedy for the folks who live there and the maritime community. That should be our focus.

You confuse meteorology with climatology.

This thread concerns the devastation in Fiji.
It was not started as a climate change thread, we have enough of those already.

If you feel a need to discuss climate change, please take it to the appropriate thread.
Thanks

Please don't b*gger up real threads with your garbage.
If you want to make that point, come over to one of the OT climate change threads.
